All of these 3rd party online streaming services are of borderline legality.

Its not illegal to stream TV from the broadcaster (aka iPlayer etc) anywhere in the world, if the broadcaster allows it. Most don't and lock their streams to a set geographical area for rights reasons.

What gets in to dubious grounds is someone else taking a feed (be that from a TV aerial farm somewhere or from a digital source and then streaming the signal they then generate, as it becomes rebroadcast. There are also issues in sending a TV program to a territories that the original broadcaster is not licensed for.

There is no such thing as a "freeview box that uses a ethernet cable".

TVCatchup has an app for each OS HERE. The problem with all of them is that when you upscale it to your TV the quality of the pic isn't going to be the best. None of them will have the full Freeview list of channels available.

    http://www.tvcatchup.com/channels , umm , 9 useable channels !!!

don,t think I will suggest buying an ipad and a cable

probably cheaper to go to the pub and watch.

I have set up a very basic raspberry Pi for him , boots directly to XBMC/kodi , all apps removed apart from not film on , plastered the icon multiple times under the remaining sectionsd that can be seen , (vids / programms) , gave him a £5 remote from ebay , bit slow (steam power) but does the job. due to booting from an sd card , I haver powered it directly from powe socket , not TV USB.
