Will warranty still be honoured if servicing not carried out?
Hi all,
I have a 4 year old Hyundai IX35. I have had it for 2 years without any problems, until recently when a few things have gone wrong around the same time. First of all one of the rear parking sensors has failed. Every time I go into reverse the system beeps at me to indicate that I am about to hit something on the rear driver side. I have checked the sensor and it looks fine so perhaps it is an electrical fault. Then the air con stopped working. I'm hoping that this is just because it needs recharged, in which case I know it's not an issue with the warranty, but it seems strange to me that it stopped working all of a sudden. Is that normal? It's never happened with any of my previous cars. Then because the air con wasn't working I opened the sunroof one day, and it wouldn't shut. I'm feeling very unlucky! Then I remembered that Hyundai offer a 5 year warranty and was all set to phone up to enquire about my problems when I realised that I missed the service last year.
So my question is whether missing a service will automatically invalidate the warranty, or if these things might be covered? I thought I'd ask on here before I phone them so I know what to expect as I am a bit clueless about these things. Any advice/help is much appreciated!

You would have to read the T&Cs for the warranty to find out whether missing a service invalidates it.
A warranty is over and above your statutory rights and manufacturers can put conditions on it if they wishThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Thanks for your reply.
I had a look at my documents from Hyundai and it just said that not servicing the car at the recommended intervals may invalidate the warranty. I'm a bit wary of taking it to the garage for them to charge me lots to look at it and then say the warranty won't cover it:(
I suppose I might just have to phone them and see what they say.0 -
My sister has a 4.5 year old Hyundai, serviced on the dot every year at the dealer.
Things are failing, but whenever she needs anything done its a battle royal with the dealer to claim against the warranty. The latest tack is to state if a component is not required to be working to pass the MOT it won't be fixed.
If you haven't had it serviced the best of luck getting anything sorted.0 -
I thought as much. I'm sure they try every trick in the book to get out of having to fix things for free.
Thanks for replying:)0 -
Why do you think that a manufacturer is trying, "every trick in the book to get out of having to fix things for free." When you haven't even bothered servicing the thing? By all means relate an honest tale about someone trying to dodge their legal commitments, but if you want to give a car attention only when things stop working through neglect, the dealer would be quite right to laugh you off the forecourt.0

If you had serviced it they may have said their is a tech bulletin for the A/C or Sunroof with a replacement part and they will fix it whilst its in for the service.
4 year old car with a poor service history, how much do you think you have lost in value because of that?
If your answer is less than the service costs your wrong.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
why should they honour the warranty if you haven't bothered to follow the service schedule?0

Cars are built by groups of highly qualified graduate engineers to very high standards. They are then sold through a network of monkeys. The monkeys need payment so they agree that everyone that buys a new car should go in every year for a £200 stamp. Sometimes the monkeys touch the car if they can be bothered. The longer the 'warranty' the more money the monkeys get.
I think you have rattled a few cages there dizzyscot.0 -
And in the real world warranties* for complicated machinery rely on preventative maintenance being carried out. We call this 'servicing'
*not to be confused with the sort of warranties used car stealers use to try to get out of their SOGA obligations0 -
What routine maintenance would be done at a service on:
Parking Sensors
Air conditioning
Sunroofs0
