Thanks for reply, we have a small hallway, 4 x 4 m living room, and kitchen/diner, so you come in to hall and have to go through L / R to get to kitchen and back garden, it's a small house about 30 years old, hey ho only 2 of us and the cat, we just want a nice carpet that isn't going to flatten and will still look good in a few years,

Around 5 years ago we renewed the carpets in our main lounge (22' x 10'), the adjoining dining room (10' x 10'), the downstairs hall, half landing, stairs, upstairs landing and main bedroom (12' x 12') all in the same close pile wool carpet with a two tone swirly grey pattern. It cost an arm and two legs! The carpet was supposed to be Heavy Domestic and I expected it to last well as there are only the two of us, no kids, no pets , DH always changes into slippers indoors and I am usually barefoot. Within 2 years it was showing awful patchy wear in any traffic areas and also in odd places like beside my side of the bed. Funily enough the stairs (which you would expect to show up the centre bit) were fine. We should have complained to the store but, unusually for me, we let it go.

I had our bedroom re carpeted with what I hope will last much better last year. We are currently redecorating and plan to recarpet the lounge and dining room when we have finished - after a lot of research we will go for a decent berber carpet. It might be a fraction coarse on bare feet but it bloody well won't flatten as its got absolutely no pile ! It wouldn't have been my first choice but I can't risk another very expensive disaster.

We had 80/20 fitted at the same time as my Mil had synthetic carpet fitted, same colour beige.
To start with Mils carpet looked shiny and not as good a quality as ours, but now a few years later her synthetic carpet looks much better than ours, has worn better whereas ours looks like it has a film on the flattened pile, cleaning helps but then gets dirtier quicker. I wish we had purchased the synthetic.

Another point is that with natural fibres, insects feed on the wool (protein) so natural carpets can harbour and be a feeding ground for carpet beetles, mites, woodlice etc!!!!

    Just my opinion....

Oh, I might have to have a dig on living Social. I booked the Conran, looks very nice, and it has a coffee machine in the room, always a bonus for me :)

    80/20 all the way!!

    What they said ;) ^^^^^^

Found it - Waldorf hilton Covent garden 2 course and sparkling for £39 on Groupon - I keep hoping for groupon to have a discount code.

Conran - not looked at this one - trying to decide which one to go for - Euston is our station - need to make a short list
