The point I was making was that the 123 has valuable benefits and you do have internet access to it.

If you cannot get a debit card, then open a debit card bearing account for your uncle as his PA and switch money between the two as required?

He already has a card on his 123 account. That's the point I'm making; he has a card which he is unable to use as he cannot get out of the house or use the Internet/telephone, and that is why I want a card in my own name.

And I'm certainly not going to take his card and use it fraudulently as someone suggested on another forum!

You were suggesting in your previous post
I would just be transferring the whole account over to another bank

This struck me as a "cutting off your nose" exercise because the 123 does have valuable benefits.

As I understood it Santander have granted you internet access as Attorney but are refusing to let you use your BIL's card or issue you with one.

If you opened another debit card bearing account with another bank for your BIL (the account would be in his name but you would operate the account "in loco" as his Attorney), you could switch money as desired between the two accounts using internet access.

All that said, I am mystified as to why, as Attorney, you cannot use your Uncle's card?

My relative who has PA for his relative can open (and has opened) accounts in her name and operates all of them "in loco" signing as John Smith, Attorney for Mary Smith. This includes using the debit cards attached to the current accounts which are in the sole name of Mary Smith.

Yes, it's a 123. How is that going to help me get a debit card though?

As per my previous post #14

Use the Santander 123 for £20,000 of savings and to pay his household bills by direct debit. You will have online access to this account as attorney.

Open a Halifax Reward account as attorney. Halifax will give you a debit card, a cheque book and online access. Transfer some of his money to this account. Use this account when you need to buy something on his behalf. With your online access you can move money easily between these 2 accounts.

As a bonus, he will earn £5 per month reward from Halifax by:
    • Transferring £750 from Santander to Halifax and back each month, and
    • Having 2 monthly paying direct debits on the Halifax account.
Don't sack Santander, take advantage of them!

I know you're asking the OP, but I used the online application process for LPA. I printed the resulting sheets, got them filled in by people where necessary, then posted off by early May and it was returned registered in late June.
I ran into problems with Halifax where they failed to verify it correctly. I just had them do it properly and posted special delivery.

I did the online process as well.
It took about 13 weeks from sending off to getting back as registered.
Then it needs to taken/sent(copy) to any institutions that you want POA over.
  • can someone tell me how i start a thread of my own please as i have a ton of questions regarding POA

OP did you get things sorted in the end?

If Santander set you up with online banking for his account without any problems, you could choose a washing machine then transfer exact money to your account by FP. It should arrive in your account immediately to enable you to make the purchase using your card (although I have heard of delays in some cases.)

Do you have online banking for your own account so that you would be able to check easily that the funds have transferred before you make an order?

Or of course you could go the Halifax route as another poster suggested, removing your own account from the equation and making him £5 better off per month.
