So I signed up to Origin when they had that killer "£172 for the year" deal in December.

What is the minimum acceptable speed an ISP can supply?

Would appear to be merely voluntary at the moment !
That said - prior to a year last January - I was still on ADSL and survived with a max 3Mbps connection !!
I am now on an 80Mbps fibre and connect reliably at 70Mbps every time !
The fact that origin are a member of ISPA doesn't help - the trade association exists purely for the benefit of it's members (ie ISP's)

I've had a real nightmare with Origin Broadband.
He said he was looking directly at the OpenReach system and could see that the order was queued for the 27th. I asked why BT's system was showing broadband only and 25th and he said that BT say that to stop customers leaving.

I'd be just as concerned with BT's tactics, I doubt they are restricted to you.

The speed doubled later today, I think it must fluctuate a lot in my area. Serves me right for being home on a saturday.

If the figures you are showing are for the 17Mb ASDL2 service, now known as regular Broadband, then you must be close to the actual BT box to get a 8Mb download speed - my folk are a mile away and highest DL we get is 6Mb and that's with TalkTalk, PlusNet and now Sky - where I live in the sticks, if I could get 8Mb download I'd be in heaven, as it stands I'm in hell with no chance of a better service for another 12-18 months.

Don't you mean "the exchange....." rather than the "roadside box" ?
Prior to upgrading to fibre - I was on ADSL+ @ 3Mbps and live100yds from the box but around a mile from the exchange

We don't even get 5 from PlusNet and are in a city, less than a mile (as the crow flies) from the exchange. Sky gave a regular 5 to 6.4.

8 on ADSL would be heaven.

I should have paid double for Fibre, it was a dumb area to try and save money.

This is the speed I'm getting from Origin:

I'm about 250m from the exchange.

BT Wholesale don't offer ADSL2+ here (only ADSL Max, i.e. 8 mbps). The LLU providers have gradually been arriving (TalkTalk, then Sky, now Vodafone) who all offer ADSL2+, but it doesn't give much choice of provider.

So that is ADSL2+? Do you think any other provider would give you a better upload? Or is that just the max of the line? My Upload is pretty shocking too.
