Just to point out OP, you do know this is illegal (insurance fraud), right?

I did actually suspect this but my dad assured me that everything was above board. (This coming from a man who doesn't know who has right-of-way at roundabouts and who assumed that just because he was fully-comp on an insurance policy, that makes him fully-comp to drive any other car)

Thank you for telling me this. All is legal once again and has been for many years.

Why do you listen to him?

There's only one person who can put a stop to what's happening and that's you.

I understand this feeling that you can't suddenly turn around and tell your dad to take a hike because that's just not the way your relationship works and it could have serious repercussions.

However, I think it might be time to start ascerting yourself a bit and the way you are suggesting to do so is the way to go about it. Tell your dad that you want a car that you can treat the way you want to because it is yours, and therefore you will sell that one and gave him money that amounts to what he has put in.

Tell him that you are massively grateful for all he has done in your life but that it is important for you to now stand on your own two feet, that it changes nothing to your relationship, but that you are now a responsible adult, and that it is time you act like one and therefore that he treats you like one too.

Just tell him to F**k off to the far side of f**k and keep going.

is he a control freak or what?

He is not in control of you. If my dad was still alive and tried to control me like your dad is then I think I'd be an orphan by now[grin]

How much would car #1 be worth if you still had it??

Tell your dad he can either buy the car off you if he still wants it, or you will he selling it to buy a car you want.

Make sure you do not end up out of pocket. You are an adult, and not his mother either!!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Certainly I would put your foot down with your father and keep your independence from now on and also make him move his car from your driveway. Sell it and calculate a reasonable amount to give him back and let him buy his own. Tell him that the arrangement is not working for you and you would rather that you get your own car to suit him and he can buy whatever car he likes.

This resentment will get worse if you do not start standing up to him. After all what can he do?

OP, I think you need to move house, miles away from them, and just communicate on Skype or the phone!

They would probably follow you though.... so don't tell them where you are!

I know I am jesting, (partly), and it probably isn't feasible, but if it were me, it is certainly something I would consider. You don't seem to have a good relationship with them, so what's to lose? You regain control and your sanity that way.
