Fed up of being dictated to!!

Agree with the others - if you're footing the costs for this, get something that suits you and your lifestyle.
And if they don't want to get in a car with dog hair in it, they can get a cab

I'm a bit lost - who actually paid for the car? You or your dad? If he paid for it is understandable that he feele a bit proprietorial. If you paid for it, then it is a totally different matter.
I paid for car #1, that car and extra money from my dad was used to buy car #2, car #2 + extra from my dad was then used to buy car #3.
Car #3 is registered in my name and I pay all insurance (including him as named driver), tax, servicing, fuel and maintenance.0 -
Why are you letting your Dad dictate what you do with your OWN CAR?! You don't sound selfish at all, in fact quite the opposite, you sound like you're being walked all over.
Sell the car for one you prefer, tell your Dad he cannot use it any more. If you really must, offer to help him look for his own car and help him chase the DVLA. I'd give him the difference back too, but that's all. Stop letting him take the biscuit!0 -
Sell the car, give your dad back the money he put in and buy something smaller and cheaper that you want to drive.
Tell your parents to sod off and find somewhere else to store their off road car - three months is a long time and they should have got it sorted by now. If I was you I would be tempted to cut your parents off completely, all they seem to do is walk over you and cause you stress.0 -
I think you know what you need to do here. Your parents "dismiss your protests"? Well you need to "dismiss" their suggestions / ideas.
Just trade the car in and get something that suits your needs, auto wise, and financially. Don't discuss it first, just do it, and tell them afterwards.
You mention your parents were living in another country, are they from a different culture where parents have more say over their children's day to day life's?0 -

No, they are British. Only lived abroad for 7 years.
That would be the easiest way to do it, I know. However my dad would flip his lid if I traded the car in without asking him first :eek::eek:0 -

So???/ You're an ADULT and the car belongs to YOU. You pay for it!
You need to man up and take the bull by the horns here I'm afraid!0 -
So what if he does? He is the one being unreasonable here, not you. You pay all the costs it's really not up to him.DivineSaver wrote: »However my dad would flip his lid if I traded the car in without asking him first :eek::eek:0 -

Exactly. So your Dad gets annoyed and maybe shouts a bit. Ignore him and if necessary just keep repeating.
"I couldn't afford to run that car anymore. This one is a lot more economical and meets my needs".0 -
Who pays for the fuel he uses when he clocks up 1000's of miles?0
