I think it is fair to say prices are going up, they may wobble a bit, but up they go faster in some places than others. I don't envy any FTB, it's a worrying time for them and homeowners because FTBs are essential!0

First Time Buyer's are gradually being replaced by buy-to-let 'investors'. Lots of problems coming down the line.
Yep and I think it will get worse now people can plunder their pension pots. Some of the disasters that will cause are yet to come to light but the BTL craze will undo a lot of people methinks, especially in the typical FTB market - I can see areas being reduced to very undesirable if the people renting don't take care of the places.
Do you ever get the feeling we are often the subject of social engineering that works on the 'let's see what happens if we...'
The Labour party, well Blair, took the restraints off immigration and look how that has changed the country (I have no idea if it will end well or not but we seem to be getting along OK) And the tampering with the housing market...what could possibly go wrong! :eek:0 -

I think as has been shown the problem is mainly confined to London and South East. Places like Surrey have always been very expensive and now in the few cheaper places like Ash Vale prices are increasing. I had to move from one of the more expensive parts of Surrey to Ash Vale in the 70s and managed to buy a 3 bed terrace now I would probably have to settle for a 2 bed flat might get a 2 bed terrace if I was lucky.
I don't think the pension thing will have a big impact as not that many people have big enough pension pots to go into BTL.0 -
We have just sold our 2 bed in Yateley (Hampshire/Surrey/Berkshire border) for £265,000 and bought a 4 bed back in Wales for £228,000. 2/3 beds in the Valleys can go as low as 50K but the valleys are an aquired taste0

Unaffordable housing forces a generation out of their home area...
YES- Exactly what I was thinking and YES - my generation must be thinking especially in the South East.
The Government need to build these 'STARTER HOMES' now!!!!...
This starter home scheme Cameron is supposedly bringing out needs to get a move on......20% discount for those 1st time buyers under 40...YES GREAT!!! But house prices are going to go up 20% by the time you pull your finger out Cameron!!! You need to build them within a year! AIN'T GOING TO HAPPEN.

Salford and Blackley.... LOL. Both ghetto. It could have only got worse if you had said Cheetham Hill looks nice... (I used to live there before anyone starts...)
TBH with you, there is not really anywhere inside the M60 that's decent in my 30 odd years of living and working in Manchester. There are places that are trendy but the bottom line is they are still not the best, crime, drugs, traffic, unemployment, general idiots etc etc.
If you are set on Manchester you need to look to the outskirts or get a flat right in the city. If I was young and single I think the latter would be better (sorry didn't read the full OP!)
The chap who moved to Wilmslow had the right idea but its not cheap. There are a few other places worth looking at, Marple is alright but a bit expensive, Culcheth has a nice village and is close to the A580, Ramsbottom and Belmont are both worth a look but more rural. (ok the first 2 are not technically in GM).
You cant really knock the city centre though, god knows how much money has gone into it in the last 20 years. Still the odd grot spot but 95% of it is like new now. That said now we are older we don't venture in often now.0 -

Do you really live here? :cool:0 -
Chester. 2 hours on the train from London. Manchester and Liverpool close by. Lake District within 1 1/2 hours drive, Snowdonia and the Welsh coast less. Bonus points for living just inside Wales, nice 4 bed detached houses for <£200k.0
