It depends on what your lifestyle is, but for me having the peaks on my doorstep, easy access to a big city and quick train to London if required makes it a very good choice. Not using the M25 anymore is bliss. Prices haven't taken off here yet, so you can still get a decent amount for your money.
In Wilmslow?! :rotfl:
Can tell you're a southerner.

On the Manchester theme....that kind of area.....
What are these areas like.....Salford, Blackley, Crewe, Heywood..
They seem very cheap.
Salford is really mixed, parts of it are dire but other parts have million pound mansions where footballers live.
Blackley's not fantastic, but Prestwich is next door which is nice and very 'up and coming'.
Heywood's a bit of a dump.
Crewe is in Cheshire, I only know the train station!
You can't just go off prices, if you're going to move across the country to somewhere completely new you'll need to do a lot of research and familiarise yourself with the areas you're considering.
Consider the value of being near your friends and family too, what is that worth to you? Noise has never been much an issue in my flat, if they're built in the last ten years or so they'll conform to new regulations so normal day to day noise shouldn't be heard too much.0 -
I'm afraid that Bridgwater is pretty grim. In fact, I don't think I have been anywhere of a similar size which is worse. It's a bit of a laughing point to anyone who lives in a nicer part of Somerset. There's usually a reason why house prices are low in a generally nice area. Sorry if I've offended anyone who lives there.0

The problem looking at Rightmove is that you are looking at properties in places you don't know. Some of the houses you've picked I know aren't great areas. Some of the suggested areas aren't great.
Sometimes it's better the devil you know when it comes to house buying.0 -

Exactly the point I was going to make - Surrey has always been expensive. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -

I lived in Shrewsbury for many years and, although there've been lots of new developments, prices are still reasonable. It might fit your needs...

:rotfl: my thoughts exactly.
If you are thinking manchester or its surrounding areas is a possibility then you need to visit really. All the areas are very different feom each other.
I would steer clear of north manchester given that you are coming from Surrey and don't want somewhere too "chavy" these areas include Blakley, middleton, crumpsall etc yes there are aome nice areas, but overall there is a reason why they are so cheap.
South manchester is more desirable, sale, ashton upon mersey, altrincham, timperley (more residential) you could get a little 2 bed terrace? You will be close to other people but if you dont want a flat your money wont stretch very far.
West manchester - Urmston (nearby trafford centre) but the train into town is painfully unreliable. But your money will go a tiny little bit further.
I was house hunting in sale/altrincham with a budget slightly higher than yours but i wasnt willing to pay for what my money could buy.
So i am moving to Worsley (the nice part), Monton has become very vibrant but parking is annoying so If I were to live there I would want parking.
Maybe just travel the UK alittle bit, see what you like and research from there!0 -
'True' Worsley is still very expensive, I'd say comparable to parts of South Manchester. Boothstown and Ellenbrook and some parts of Swinton that are on the right side of the Eat Lancs Road are still nice and affordable and benefit from being close to the 'desirable' area. It does make me laugh though that if you put 'Worsley' into a Rightmove search you get loads of results for Walkden and Little Hulton!
South Manchester and Cheshire are expensive, but one possible benefit for the OP is that its much easier and quicker to get to London and Surrey. The tilting trains go straight from Stockport, Macclesfield and Wilmslow to Euston in less than 2 hours.0 -
The Isle of Wight, where 30%% of the 1200-odd homes currently on the market are under £200k... compared with Surrey where barely 2% of the 5,000+ homes are 2 bedders in your price-range...?
Pros... amazingly cheap property, very good environment (albeit a bit old-fashioned, which adds to the charm IMHO) and a benign micro-climate...
Cons... very low wages and limited job opportunities (unless you commute over the Solent or continue to work from home), expensive ferry crossings (a bit cheaper for residents) ...0
