What you can get for under £200,000 elsewhere around the country:
South Coast:
Poole, Dorset, 3 Bed, £200,000:

Bournemouth, Dorset, 3 Bed, £200,000:

Portsmouth, 3 Bed, £200,000:

South West:
Bristol/Bath, 2 Bed apartment, £174,000:

Bridgwater, Somerset, 4 Bed House, £188,000:
https://www.taylorwimpey.co.uk/find-your-home/england/somerset/bridgwater/kings-down/easton---13
Bridgwater seems cheap - any reason why? A 4 bed house where I live costs around £400,000+, so £188,000 is very tempting.
The North....
Well the North is generally bargains galore....
South Normanton, Derbyshire, Massive 4 Bed detached house, £224,000:
https://www.taylorwimpey.co.uk/find-your-home/england/derbyshire/alfreton/weavers-gardens/the-harewood
That would probably be at least £600,000 in Surrey.....do people get shot daily in South Normanton? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Do you definitely need a two bedroom house right now? My first place was a 1 bed flat, but it increased in value while I had it much faster than I could ever possibly have saved, and the gain has provided me with a big enough deposit for a proper house second time around.0

Feel free to skip straight to my question beyond the highlighter bold text if you don't want to be bored of my waffling...but here goes...
I am in my late 20's looking at getting onto the property ladder....
I have a hefty deposit ready, but aim to buy somewhere next summer after saving a little bit more....
I was bought up in Surrey and still live here, my family are in here and I'd prefer to stay here....PROBLEM: House prices around here are getting ridiculous.
I think a lot of us younger generation who have grown up and want to stay in and buy property in the area simply won't be able too. We have been priced out massively.
When my parents purchased their house in 1987 - Which was a 3 bedroom semi-detached house in a very nice area - it was £68,000, the average salary was £10,000. So house prices were around 7x the average salary at the time.....
Today that house is worth £380,000+. The average salary today is £25,000. So now costs 15x the average salary. AND house prices are supposed to rise another 20-30% in the area in the next 5 years.
These days - around here the best 3 bed properties you can get for 7x the average salary (£175,000) are the very few flats in the less inviting areas.
I just wondered....
I can work from home so I could live anywhere in the UK...so...
If you could buy anywhere in the UK, you had a maximum budget of £200,000....Where would you live? (Has to be a house with at least 2 bedrooms).
There are of course places in the South that you could get a reasonable property for this amount. Bournemouth and Bristol areas aren't too bad.
Anyone have any reasonable towns/areas that aren't too bad anywhere in the UK that have at least 2 bed reasonable looking houses under £200,000?
I grew up in Surrey 50 years ago and very few people then could afford to live there. The vast majority of people I went to school with don't live in Surrey, despite having reasonably well paid, professional jobs.0 -
Manchester area. Good airport with great transport connections. Some cheap areas where 200k will get you a great house.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0

I moved to Wilmslow from Herts 5 years ago and much prefer it. It depends on what your lifestyle is, but for me having the peaks on my doorstep, easy access to a big city and quick train to London if required makes it a very good choice. Not using the M25 anymore is bliss. Prices haven't taken off here yet, so you can still get a decent amount for your money.0 -

I am put off by flats. I am not good with noise and would most likely get annoyed a lot...
If I was to buy a flat it would have to be in a good area and most likely in a building with few flats = less people = less noise.
There are tiny apartments in not so nice areas for as low as £120,000 around here....not really for me to be honest. You can even pay up to £200,000 for a larger 1 bed apartment in a less than appealing area locally. Paying this much money for a 1 bed apartment is just crazy.....especially seeing what £200,000 can get you elsewhere in the country......
Just one example:
3 Bed terraced house, Bridgwater, Somerset, just £165,000:
https://www.taylorwimpey.co.uk/find-your-home/england/somerset/bridgwater/kings-down/gosford---4
£165,000 where I live gets you no more than a 1 bed apartment, if you're lucky you may find a nice small apartment in a nice area at best.
Buying a family home around where I live - you will need a hefty deposit and at least £30,000 income.
The main aim of this thread is to try to get an idea from others as to where around the country is affordable + a nice enough area. That £165,000 house in Bridgwater is cheap - but is it a town that is grim?.....
I am just looking to hear about areas which are reasonable, basically chavs at a bare minimum, and has a decent shopping centre, gym facilities, and cinema 15 - 20 mins away. Somewhere with 1 or 2 nice green spaces. Somewhere pleasant where you don't find shopping trolleys in your local river, or couples in tracksuits arguing in your local Tesco's on regular occasions.
I think parts of Manchester have been mentioned so far. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

They seem very cheap. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I would say even parts of Manchester are going to go above the 200k budget with your requirements.0

Avoid. If you are used to Surrey.
Wouldn't live in Salford if someone paid me unless its Worsley.
Heywood and Blackley are not very nice.
Crewe i know nothing about but i imagine it's nothing like Surrey or anywhere you are looking for.0 -
Salford includes the Quays, Claremont and Monton and Monton is nicer than a lot of Worsley. Again parts of Heywood are nice too. I have no idea about Blackley.0
