In a previous post AVG was suggested for the anti-virus and anti-spy. The licence for the free versions are for personal use only. A business would have to buy.
Depending how your PC is set up for email, AVG would scan your incoming messages and add a note to the bottom of your email stating it was the free version.

Buy a _student_ licence of Windows XP in their name. It's far cheaper to do it that way. Don't install it on their machine, keep it for your own PC. This isn't illegal, it's a loophole in MS licencing and it's legitimate to do.
I don't think there is such a loophole. The software can only be used primarily by the licensee on the licensee's machine.
I'm not sure how much you'd save anyway compared to an OEM copy."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

superscaper wrote: »This does make things more difficult, the crux of it not working is having illegal software which doesn't really make you entitled to anything. I think the only thing that is independant of the illegal software in this case is the salesman's advice about kaspersky Vs onecare (which would come under missold clause). But whether that is enough to justify a refund is rather dubious.
On a serious note, I agree from what you said that there is very little legal grounds for the refund, but would suggest that PC World might be good enough to at least give store credit if you ask nicely... you can't lose anything by asking...0 -
This is really all a moot point as onecare isn't actually the problem here and the OP hasn't indicated they even want to return it, just to get a genuine copy of XP. But as a hypothetical there may be a chance of getting a refund or credit and I'm not sure what approach to take. I was a bit peeved at reading the sales guy deliberately putting off the OP from buying kaspersky. I'd on principle want to pursue it from that angle but I doubt it would get anywhere."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Thanks for the input everyone. My husband is thinking of getting the Kapersky one anyway and trying to sell this Windows Live Onecare on Ebay or whatever to someone who can use it. It says you can use it for up to 3 pc's, I've used it for one...I'm not sure if that's a possibility.
The PC World guy said he found the constant pop ups on the Kapersky one flummoxed him, so although he said it's better than the Windows one for security, he wouldn't recommend it. I'm guessing the fact that our Windows XP turned out to be duff would not affect the Kapersky one working to full capacity like it has the Onecare one?
I will have a look at the Openoffice stuff..I'm worried on two counts - one, that my pc is very slow and I'm worried it'll slow it down a lot having Office and Open Office on it, and two, I'm suffering from sleep/time deprivation and I'm worried I won't be able to get my head round it properly!
I'm still for getting the Kapersky 6.0 security suite for peace of mind..if anyone could let me know if it'd work ok despite our Windows XP seemingly being off the back of a wagon, I'd really appreciate it, OH is out and about so he can stop off on the way home for it.
I think I need a gin....!

you have 30 days to return it - even if you have used a license - well at least you have if you use our resellers... who knows about pc-world...:)
Take that software back to PC-world!
I have been workign for Trend Micro for 3 1/2 years but as I am now leaving on friday I think I can safely say that I don't have a hidden interest in the company - Instead of Kapersky buy PC-cillin - the support is good (if I do say so myself) the price isn't extortionate and you can use it on 3 machines. 2007 is avialble on 30 day triel on the www.trendmicro.co.uk pages and it's easy to install.
I would recommend getting a legal OS if you haven't one already and then use the open free software for word etc.
I use Vista on my laptop and home sucked - I got a free copy through contacts for the Ultimate edition and that runs like a dream.
I knwo people rave about free AV software but I have spent 3 1/2 years trying to fix problems caused by people running them and frankly for the sake of £30-40 I'd say buy a half decent Av package... especially if this is also your work machine.DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Having open office and M$ Office on your computer shouldn't make much if any difference to the speed your computer operates at (unless for some reason you run them both at the same time...) As far as I know open office doesn't leave anything running in system memory, so it shouldn't be eating memory or CPU time unless you actually click on it and open it... M$ office does, but you've already got it installed anyway!
As for learning time, the interface is almost identical, and so shouldn't take long to learn.
Have fun0 -

Can you post on which version of Windows XP is installed, together with the amount of memory, by following my earlier instructions?
Also let me know which version of Office you have installed. 2000? 2002? 2003?0 -
It's Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2, 751MHz, 192mb of RAM, and I think the Office is 2002 - when I checked properties on Word and Publisher it comes up 2002, so I'm guessing that'd be right?
I found a disk in the loft just now with the boxes the guy left when he installed it, December 2004, it's a copy cd with 'Office XP Pro' written on it with a CD key written on it, whether it's any use I don;t know. I found Excel on it anyway, lol!

Oh dear sounds like your copy of office is illegal as well.
At least with open office you know it's up to date and not software that's several years old. It'll open, edit, save excel files as well."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
