Hi Donnie! Still on your hols? I've only managed to put new memory in, not had chance to reinstall stuff or save stuff to disc pre-re-install yet, either.
I know this sounds a bit crackers, but the inside of the pc was very dusty, daren't touch anything incase I damaged it. Would that matter?

It's not that sensitive. I use a normal vacuum cleaner to remove dust from within the tower unit. Just exercise a little care.
Make sure that the new memory is seated properly and check that it is being recognised by pressing the Windows + Pause/Break keys.
Yes, I'm still on my hols, though with a broken 4th metacarpal.
I had to repay some drunken fools for attacking me from behind. They thought their numbers would help them. They were wrong.
So typing is a little awkward.
So, back to the original topic.0 -
Ouch! Sounds painful Donnie!
I wonder, have you heard of this? http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/
It is a fully functional linux system, it is free, and then you can extend it as much as you like. They also sell CDs of the system for about £10, which you can run without having to install it on your computer, just to see if it works for you
I wouldn't have thought dust would have that much effect on the computer though - at school the computers had enough dust to make me cough, yet they still run perfectly well all things considered.0 -
It's just part of the refurbishment process.
It's not painful at all.0 -

Hi everyone! I keep getting booted out of this every couple of mins max so I'm typing quickly..
I've dusted the innards of the pc with a brush and vacuum, but it's still kaput. The memory is showing as 704 which is right, could it still be that I've installed the memory incorrectly dya think?
Donnie, hope you're recovering well, what a bummer. Sounds painful for them maybe too??
Thanks everyone, sorry it's short and abrupt but rushing before I'm kicked out again...:o

I've taken all the memory out and only put the new 512 back in and so far so good...
I'll let you know how it goes, seems still to be ok.
Is it possible to have too much memory do you think? In the same context as giving an old lady a zimmer with a turbo charger I mean?

some older motherboards/computers can only support a certain amount of ram.
i've got a few motherboards that can only take upto 768mb. my main computer can take up to 4gb of ram, but i've only got a stick of 512mb in it0 -
Does anyone know how essential it is that you put the memory in order of smallest to largest amount for the pc to function properly, please? Seems to be working ok with 512mb if a little slower, so I'm wondering whether to put some more memory in and seeing how it goes...

for example, say i have a 1gb, a 256mb and a 512mb stick of ram. i would tend to put the 1gb in slot 1, the 512mb in slot 2 and the 256mb in slot 30 -
Don't worry about the memory just yet. Your problem is probably aligned to the fact that you have tried to have all three RAM modules in use. You motherboard is probably designed to have only two slots working at a time.
My instruction earlier;you could remove the 128MB and put the 512MB in it's place. Then take the 64MB RAM out and put the 128MB in it's place(That is the generally recommended configuration).
Your motherboard is probably designed to take DDR memory(2 pieces) or SDRAM(2 pieces). Since you already had some SDRAM memory, we continued with those.
It's important that you follow instruction as closely as possible, as the 704 MB thing could have been easily missed.
640MB is the likely max you can have( 512 + 128 MB) with your existing modules and they should be in the same slots that held the old memory.
You should begin the Back Up and Re-installation process.0 -
Uh oh..trying with just the new 512 memory installed lasted a day - the computer is crashing again quicker each time I try and log on.
I've taken the new memory out and put the old back in and it's working but it's SO SLOW that I want to sit and cry! I rang the chap who built it for us and he suggested it could be that the new memory is incompatible, so I've emailed Funky Giraffe where I got the memory from to see if they can help figure out whether that's the case. Sigh.
It's catch 22 as we can't possibly try and run it with the 192mb as I will end up with alopecia, but it won't work properly with the new 512mb memory. We can't install anything and so it's all on hold I guess until Funky Giraffe can advise re: compatability, unless anyone has any suggestions I haven't tried, please?
This is so frustrating, I really appreciate everyone's input.
