Working in supermarkets is poo, so if you work in one, like myself, then i feel we have every right to give customers dirty looks. Further we have the right to shout, swear and beat them up.

But seriously, to me you are being wayy to sensitive. I would personally be embrassased to even try and complain about your 'incident'.

Anyways nowt wrong with being a volture

If the assistant had turned to her and smiled then no doubt she could have seen it as a sarcastic smile as well.

Nope I wouldn't, I am a friendly, positive human being who will strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, not only socially but also professionally. I can however am adept at deciphering body language and tone and intent behind comments. Just as I can gather the non friendliness behind your comments Sco0ter.

And with your final comment I rest my case... You are now assuming I am being unfriendly towards you because I did not take your side. This is probably what you did with the shop assistant and as usual got it all wrong.

Feel free to look through any post I have done and you will not find one negative amongst them. I did write replies to all your comments to me but didnt see the point in posting them as your last one shows you are indeed unable to read situations like you think you are.

I had read the thread well before my post and didnt see the point in replying because it just sounded like the usual unhappy customer rant. But when you start talking of reporting people thats when I posted.

If you are a friendly, positive human being who will strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, not only socially but also professionally. I can however am adept at deciphering body language and tone and intent behind comments. Then why not say something at the time??? Why let it upset you?? Why not go over to the assistant and ask "was that directed at me??"

I would say gathering by your responses that you are more of an insecure individual who takes criticism to heart .

You can sit and attack me all you want you will just be reinforcing everything I have said. This situation is the same. I didnt agree with you and now you think Im some sort of unfriendly person just the same as you are laying all the blame on some poor shop assistant that had the nerve to look at you after agreeing with another shopper.

One response I will give is to your first comment

people reply to threads Sco0ter, that's what forums are for.

I agree with that statement but you have to realise that not everyone is going to agree with everything you say.. This is not being unfriendly its called A POINT OF VIEW. Thats what you are asking for when you post on forums not for people just to continually say you are right.

I'm a vulture and proud of it! Why shouldn't we get the bargains when they are available?

I'm often to be found near the reduced fridge in Tesco just after reduction time and I usually manage to get a nice cheap tea for us. I'm a single mum so need all the help I can get! Best bargains I ever got were in Morrisons, there was a ton of stuff they needed to get rid of and the worker was sellotaping two packets of things together and reducing them to a fraction of the price of one of the items! He was my best friend that day :T :rotfl:

Manners are always a good idea though, shop workers don't get paid to be jostled and given verbal abuse, if you're patient and polite I'm sure you will get a good response. I've chatted to the workers while they were stickering stuff before now and they are occasionally a little more generous with the odd reduction ;)

It doesn't matter in the slightest what she thinks! You haven't done anything wrong, she's rude - nobody has been killed or injured, life will go on as before.

BTW I work in a supermarket, some of the assistants can be a bit condescending about people buying a lot from the reduced sections. More fool them. What they have got to be stuck up about I don't know. I'm a fellow vulture, I'll have a good dig in the reduced section every evening after work, it's sthe best bit of the whole shop.

I regularly manage to grab some reductions - tonight being an example. I got about £80 of stuff (mostly steak) for about £5. I must admit this is a lot more than I usually get, and the reductions - to 20,5p and 2p - was a lot bigger than usual. I think the reduction staff were in a rush to clear the stock and couldn't be bothered to work out % reductions, so did everything at set prices - lovely !!

I probably have had a few filthy looks, or more possibly jealous looks before now - but I have developed a hard skin. When money is tight you have to. Probably some of the staff have a low opinion of me - so what. My children are very well fed, and whether I bought the stuff or not, they would still have to do the mindless job anyway every night.
Whilst visiting family I went late at night to buy a bottle of wine at their local Morrisons - The staff actually came around the aisles with a trolley load of reduced stuff asking if I wanted anything. There was so few customers, and such a lot of stuff left they even came to the checkout with me and pleaded with me to "take another couple....." they just wanted rid of the stuff, presumably so they could clear up and go home.

I often see fellow 'vultures' and usually have a chat with them and the staff. We even hand each other items, or point out things on the shelf which they might want. It is normally all done with good grace and humour.

Equally I have often gone late night shopping, and 'missed' all the reductions. I see people at the checkouts with trolley loads of reduced stuff. I would never call anyone names because of this. It is their good fortune, and my bad timing.
I don't take anything I know we will not eat - although the pets do eat very well occasionally :D Neither would I block the shelves etc, although I have seen this done.
Oh, and I do follow the sa with the reduction gun - I would have thought it was common sense. Where they go, the bargins are. I am hopefully training my children to get a bargin too. Although they complain about me always shopping, they love it when I come home with bags full of luxery goodies:rolleyes:
I think it is all down to basic manners. Whatever you might think of someone, to make a derogatory comment like that 'within hearing' is just downright rude.

    GREAT post Old Bag.
  • Where do you find these amazing reductions. Where I go the only reductions seem to be at the most 20% off the original price. I find the salads limp and the bread ought to be reclassified as building material before they would even contemplate reducing it.

I must be going to the wrong places at the wrong time I guess...
  • i think you have to remember that shop assistants are in the public view all day. if they need to get something of their chest then theres a good chance it will get seen by someone. it is not like speaking to nasty customers on phones in an office. you can't just put the phone down and have a laugh about it with a colleague at the desk next to you.

retail is a very low paid profession but we all seem to expect to get the best of sevice everywhere. retail staff are real people, not robots. they get upset and angry like everyone else, only in retail you are right in front of your oppressor - the customer. you don't tip retail staff either so don't think they'll go the extra mile like a waitor or waitress, they have nothing to gain from it. when you see a comments box in a shop, instead of thinking "i have no complaints" and waling by, why not think "that wee girl on the bakery really helped me" and put something positive in it.

every day i see people grabbing things off people doing reductions. why not just stand back and let them do their job and then go and have a look at whats been reduced? even hovering about is very annoying to the person doing reductions as they are constantly wondering when this vulture will swoop? what item(s) are they waiting for? remember, they are dealing with this EVERYDAY and sometimes with a lot of people all doing the same thing. Think about your work, what if someone is standing right up at you, staring at every little thing you do, watching everything you do and grabbing the final product from your hand as soon as your done without a please or a thank you, how would you feel?

i don't mean you should accept poor service but let the staff do their job.

well done for getting a bargain all the same.
