Range Rover Evoque - garage has had it 4 weeks due to fault

My dream was to own a Range Rover Evoque so after saving hard and making a few other sacrifices I saved enough money to buy a brand new one that was back in March 2014. The day arrived to pick my new car up and the garage gave us the grand reveal trying to keep a level head and contain my excitement my husband and I checked the car over and we had a fair few issues with the quality of paint work, marks on the interior and scratches on the bumper so we refused to take the car. Two weeks later car came back and all the issues were resolved...happy days . Wind the clock forward 12 months enjoying our car and clocking up 12k miles my husband was driving the car to work and the dreaded red warning triangle appeared on the dash at the same time the car lost power. RR assist were called and said the DPF exhaust sensor had a fault so it needed to go straight to the garage. Garage had the car for a week and said its all fixed everything was ok. 3 weeks later and 300 miles more on the clock the same thing happened again. RR assist were called again said it was the same issue the fault had returned. As you can imagine I wasn't best pleased with garage and told them so in as many words. They assured me this would be investigated thoroughly. 4 days passed I had not heard from the garage so I called them to be told they were waiting on Land Rover to tell them what to do to fix it so give them a few more days. Few more days passed and the garage called to say that the fault is caused by a software issue and Land Rover haven't got a fix for it. Another week passed garage rang told me nothing had changed no fix. This has now gone on for 4 weeks until today when the garage called to say Land Rover won't be able to provide a fix until the end of July!!! and that is at the earliest! So my car is just sitting in the garage car park gather dust until a fix is deployed and goodness knows what other problems just sitting idle will cause

my car is only 15months old it's been back to the garage 4 times since I handed over my money (granted once was for a service) so I am pretty cheesed off with Land Rover.
Sorry for my ramble but wanted to outline the story before I ask the questions:-
Has anyone else with a RRE got the same problem?
Does anyone know my consumer rights? Am I entitled to ask Land Rover for a refund and get my money back and they can keep the car ?
I must add I have got a hire car that Land Rover are paying for ( which must be costing them a fortune) as the car is a high spec RR so i can't complain about that however I didnt expect to be driving a hire car after paying over 40k for a call less than 15months ago!

Any advise would be appreciated
Regards

I can't really help you but I feel your pain.....

Bought a brand new CX-5 on 23 March and we have only put 600 miles on the clock as it has a rattly noise when the revs die down when you first start it up - it's almost like oil starvation and it's metal on metal.

It has been back and forwards to our dealer, the noise recorded and sent to Mazda UK, readings taken blah blah blah - they have now had it (this time) for 3 weeks and we are still no nearer.

We are on holiday driving around Europe beginning of August and have told them in no uncertain terms that they either fix it properly or they will have to give us a car to take as we are not taking that one. So far, their response has been we have excellent European breakdown cover.....erm...we are travelling around not staying in one place for more than 3 days and have shelled out money to go to places so we are not having our holiday ruined if the car breaks down european cover or not!

One thing though, the DPF fault is quite common - my boss has a Jag and it's happened to him - been back and forwards to the local dealer because of it - when we looked at our car, OH was keen on a diesel one, but when asked, the garage salesman was quite truthfull and said that your car may develop a fault but it may not, so that is one of the reasons why we bought petrol instead.

Good luck with your dealer and your car.

DPF systems are very temperamental, they require a very particular type of usage.

Including far more than 12,000 miles a year,e specially if very few of them are long distance trips.

Do you know what they did the first time, did they actually replace the sensor? I'm puzzled why they're saying it's a software fault given the car ran fine up to this point.

I don't know if there's any good Range Rover forums you can look up, that's what I'd be checking to see if others have had similar faults and also to see if there's a decent dealer you can take the car to as it doesn't sound like your one is very good. As mentioned above, DPF's can be temperamental and DPF sensor failures are not that unusual even in new cars but that shouldn't be keeping the car off the road.

I personally don't have any faith in dealers, the few times I've had to use them they've been completely hopeless so I've then turned to my usual backstreet garage and problem has been fixed straight away.

  • D4nny - thanks for you kind words yes I will keep you updated but due to fix timescales I am not expecting to hear from the garage again anytime soon.
Grumpy git (bet you aren't really!) - sorry to hear about your Mazda hope they sort it out before your holiday. They don't seem to be very sympathetic about how car troubles could ruin a holiday that you have worked hard to pay for and have looked forward too for some time.

Johnmc17 - we have looked at the Evoque forums and a few people have has sensor issues but they seem to get them fixed can't see anyone saying it has been a recurring problem for them. The paper work we got from the garage does state the sensor was replaced the first time To be fair the garage have been really nice to use and you can tell they are as equally as frustrated as we are. Our next step is to write to Land Rover HQ and see what they have to say.

Sorry don't understand what people mean when they say very particular use...we use the car to commute to work everyday and use to travel up and down motorways to visit parents once or twice a month as well as everyday use shopping etc at weekends...its that not what a car is meant to be used for??

Think yourself lucky you don't have a Vauxhall Zafira.

    Incomplete.regen can cause engine failure.

I very much doubt you will be getting s full refund any time soon.

How much of your usual driving is round town?

As that makes DPF issues worse.

I had the Red Triangle DPF light last year and they changed some sensors.

Since using mainly Shell Nitro and normal Shell/BP etc I have had no issues with the Red Triangle.

Unfortunately a few of them seem to have this fault. It sounds like your garage has been told to wait for yet another software update (like many manufacturers, it will just give a wider tolerance of failure so the warning lights don't come on), but you need to complain long and hard to get to the top of the fix queue.
I have to admit, they would normally have blamed you and supermarket fuel by now.

DPF's can be more problematic if the car is used for lots of short trips as that means the car can struggle to regenerate the DPF to clear it out which in time if it keeps failing means a trip back to the dealer for a forced regeneration.

This clearly isn't the case with your car though as it's a sensor failure which could occur regardless of how suitable your driving is for a DPF.
