Southampton airport- noise under flightpath?

If you do a search on google you should find a site that will give you the noise footprint of any airport, and also tell you what you can expect as compo from the airport
Thanks Algar. I have looked at this but feel none the wiser. It is in a zone that has bars between 55 and 60 dB, which is probably bad but doesn't mean anything much to me? I don't think there is any compensation because residents campaigned unsuccessfully a few years ago to get the airport to pay for sound proofing.Mortgage overpayments 2018: £4602, 2019: £7870
Mortgage overpayments 2020: £4620
Mortgage 2017 £145K, June 2020 £112.6k

It would only take one resident to show that a vortex had damaged their roof for the airport to start taking notice of complaints, I don't know the situation in Southampton but 50 to 60 db does not strike me as being very loud. Concorde could be as high as 120db at times, and that was on low power takeoffs.0

I can't comment on the noise, but with regards to re-selling, you have to think the situation you are in now...you're potential buyers will likely be thinking the same thing
Add the various statistics that come out at intervals that prove that people ARE bothered by neighbouring noise - even if they think they aren't.
That being - that their health is worse because of this nearby noise.
I cant recall the exact details of that research - but the basic message of it was that peoples bodies are under stress because of neighbourhood noise - even if the person themselves isn't consciously feeling stressed about it.0 -
I live under the flightpath from soton airport out over the front, you don't hear it at all.
I get woken up by the cruise ships in the fog more! although Bitterne Park is a bit further up so you wont get that, you will be able to hear the Southampton FC on a good day tho!0 -
One point that strikes me is that peoples individual perceptions of aircraft noise are going to vary according to whether they personally are responsible for some of it.
That is - I realised some years back that I simply think its so unfair for people to be subjected to aircraft noise and hate it so much myself that I would be being more than a little hypocritical if I decided "Hate it - but will keep causing it (ie by using planes myself)".
At that point - I made the decision that I can never fly in planes again until such time as they are silent and don't create any pollution. With that = I am going to get rather more upset by aircraft noise than someone who knows they are helping to create it (ie by using aircraft themselves at intervals).
So someone who knows they use aircraft themselves doesn't really have that much right to complain. But, as someone who is boycotting aircraft mainly because of the noise they create, then I am going to get a lot more upset about being disturbed by them than most iyswim.
So - one question you need to ask yourself is "Do I use aircraft myself - or no?" to see how upset you would feel about their noise.0 -

I.e. My place in Colnbrook gets the benefit of completely free roof repairs and windows changed regularly, currently there is triple glazing as well and a few other benefits such as being paid £400 a year to have a noise measuring device on one of my fence posts for ten years before T5 was built. Very welcome.
Sidefx............Do you remember all the idiots parked along the main road to get a glimpse of Concorde on it's final landing there? I was in my garden cheering.
I'd moved by then, but I can understand you cheering.
You could never miss it going overhead and I always feared for the windows!!!!!0 -

Completely irrelevant.
I lived near to and directly under a Heathrow flight path for years before I'd ever been anywhere near, yet alone stepped foot on a plane. Didn't actually fly on a plane till many years later.
The sound of them didn't bother me as I was accustomed to it so I think you are way off the mark.
It's two different things in my book, becoming accustomed to noise pollution and being against air travel in principle. I think you are talking about the latter which isn't relevant to this thread.0 -
Manor Farm Road is a bit closer to the airport than the football ground and various pre-match pubs with gardens which I use (!), but in those places you don't notice the sound of the aircraft. The ones using Southampton are pretty quiet, and no large long haul aircraft or prospect of them as they've enlarged the runway as far as practicable.
You'll have to make your own mind up, obviously, but it's certainly worth pursuing, I'd say. I get more noise from Spitfires going over my garden than anything I've noticed in Southampton!0 -
I have double glazing and I've just heard a plane go over at 5000 feet (taking off from Gatwick), but most of the time I don't notice them. If I have the windows open they can get irritating after a while. However the London to Brighton main line trains are far more of a nuisance than the planes when I have the back windows open, especially when there are workers on the track (as they whistle).0
