Southampton airport- noise under flightpath?

Yesterday I had a look at a lovely flat in Bitterne Park right by the waterfront. Manor farm road if anyone knows the area. I was all poised to make an offer when I realised it's directly under the flight path. I suspect this may not bother me that much but I would be grateful for any local knowledge or advice from anyone who has lived very near an airport?

It's only about a mile and a half away, so very close. The air traffic is planned to increase by 50% in the next 15 years. Sadly a plane didn't pass over when I was inside so I found it difficult to decide. I stood outside for 30 mins and didn't hear one. Seems like a nice area but would it drive me insane? Would it be very difficult to sell? I liked the area a lot but it's difficult to decide when you haven't lived somewhere before. I've lived on a very busy road next to an A+E department before and didn't notice the sirens after a week. I imagine this will be louder and more frequent though.

I can't comment on the noise, but with regards to re-selling, you have to think the situation you are in now...you're potential buyers will likely be thinking the same thing

I have relatives who live under a flight path. They say they stopped even hearing the planes within a few weeks. I've even stopped noticing them when I visit now. I think its like living near anything else noisy, when its always there you tune it out!

This may be of some use,

I live in the Shirley area so can't really help, no noise here.
    It's someone else's fault.

My head says you're right and it's a silly idea. My heart says move to the pretty place by the water as soon as possible. ;) Silly heart.

Thanks squirrel. I suspect I might be the same. Is an airport of comparable size? Were they similarly very close indeed?

Thanks dodger. That was interesting and confirms that the noisier take off would be right past the flat! I had a look around Shirley and part of it seemed nice but too expensive. The other warren part wasn't as pretty but much more affordable. Without planes too.:rotfl:

Given that houses are pretty expensive it's probably worth going back and standing outside for longer so you know either way - worth waiting there until one comes over, so you know.

I used to live under the final approach into heathrow. For 3 years I was in a new flat with excellent sound insulation including triple glazing. The noise was not a problem. Then I moved mile down the road still under the flight path into a single glazed Victorian conversion flat. It was a total nightmare and I used to get woken up by superjumbos coming over at 4.30am every morning.

Also- check what times flights actually happen - heathrow are allowed to land 18 planes or something like that outside the normal flight curfews and these all seem to arrive at 4.30-6am. There will probably be information about this sort of thing on the airport's website.

Also worth checking what sort of aircraft Southampton handles - 2 engine planes are much quieter than 4 engine ones. I presume there is no 4 engine long haul passenger traffic from Southampton simply due to insufficient demand to support such routes, but there might be large freight planes operating if the runway is long enough.

Thanks for your reply. You're quite right, I have to spend a lot more time there. It's a long distance from me at the moment and I'm trying to rush the decision. I hadn't thought about the double glazing! It is only double glazed and an old conversion so could be an issue. The airport is closed 23.00-06.00 but has permission for 10 night flights / month. No long haul flights yet but if the runway is extended in the future...

I've lived under the Southampton Airport flight path my entire life. I literally have never noticed it.

It's a valid comment that it could impact potential buyers' opinions though.

If you're referring to Shirley Warren, it has a pretty poor reputation.

Thanks TrickyDicky101. I know I'm being cheeky but I would be so grateful if you could PM the name of the streets you've lived on where it hasn't bothered you?:o That would be reassuring to know. I wonder if I would be better off looking for a place away from the waterside but that was part of the appeal. Also do you live in an older building? I completely understand if you don't want to share that personal information with an internet stranger!

I am, it's a shame. Southampton property is a lot more expensive than I was expecting.

I have planes heading for 028 at Heathrow passing at 250 feet directly above my garden in Colnbrook. I'm only 300 yards from the end of the runway. Your one and a half miles distance means the aircraft would still be above 1500 feet at least.

I hated Concorde, especially when they fluffed the landing and did a go round at full power.
