I don't quite follow why you need to have glasses as well as lenses,

Opticians tell you not to rely solely on lenses.

I've worn contact lenses for nearly 50 years now. For a long time I had no back up glasses at all. I do have some now, but I only ever use them on a long haul night flight when I know I will want to sleep.

I've never lost my lenses or been unable to wear both of them, although occasionally I can't wear one or the other for a day or so.

OP, can't you use normal sunglasses with your contact lenses? You do seem to have very complicated arrangements!

Shop around, even if you can't get them online other high street opticians are cheaper than Boots.

Your comment about alcohol and drug abuse is pretty ignorant - on so many levels. No one sets out to become an addict, most turn to drugs etc for life circumstances we could only imagine. I'm sure many would swap a life of abuse for your dodgy eye sight.

Yes, those mouthfuls of alcohol and intravenous drugs are difficult to avoid stumbling into...
Yeah right, alkies and druggies are self abusers. Regardless of the reasons, they CHOOSE to abuse.
Comparing that to a disability is simply offensive.

You need to stop bluddy moaning.

My husband has had 13 operations on his eyes in the past 15 years or so.
He has no vision because of scar tissue in one eye and no peripheral vision in his other eye.

I would give every penny we have to have his vision to a standard that it could be paid to have it corrected with glasses etc.

He has had cataracts, countless detached retinas,

    Now count your blessings.....
No I will not thank you. I also have bad eyesight. Unfortunately it is not counted as a disability in the UK. It should be. My eyesight is similar to that of OP. And yes, my prescription gigs will be about £400 each as well. Bifocals are no good. So it is two pairs, one for work, one to drive. One pair of sunglasses as well. Good job I earn enough and have stable eyes to pay for them
  • I don't quite follow why you need to have glasses as well as lenses, except for emergency and in that case, why you need to fork out to have thinner lenses.
Perhaps like me, if I do not, my lenses will not fit in most frames because of their depth. Stupid question.

    Stupid, but polite.;)

If, like you (and me) the OP wore glasses all the time then obviously you need thinner lenses. My point was that s/he's someone who wears contact lenses normally so it didn't seem necessary to spend that sort of money for glasses that are seldom worn.

I have just paid for new glasses at a similar prescription, I'm lucky I can afford it but until you've lived with it you don't known how it impacts you. I agree with the comments of the OP.

In case anybody's interested, this is the RNIB's information about certification for being partially sighted.

I have keratoconus - corneas are forming into a cone shape.

Until I had a clear plastic ring inserted under my cornea (INTAC) 4-5 years ago, My prescription changed 4 times in 2 years. It was actually cheaper for me to get entire new frames every time I got a new prescription!!! As my right lens needed to be thinned and coated with anti glare stuff. It cost me about £140-170 every 6 months. Now I need to spend hat amount every 15 months

I think its disgrace that we have to pay good money for something we need to perform day to day tasks such as working, driving etc.

We are not given the choice of having bad eyesight. There are various eye problems in both sides of my family and KC isn't one of them.
