Do you work at all? Just curious, as under WTC rules if you are in a couple you need to work a minimum of 24 hours a week to get tax credits,

Also why are you still hanging around this thread? You showed everyone you don't belong on this thread and are in no position to offer advice when you questioned the business not making a profit within the first 12-24 months...

A cake making business can easily make a profit in the first 12 months. It's local so marketing is minimal. Made to order so expenses are minimal. Etc etc.

I'm talking about employed professionals who have the opportunity to work where they want, as long as the work is completed. You'll find this is the norm amongst professionals such as academics, programming professionals etc - even people who have jobs with companies like Unilever etc.

There is a difference between working at home employed when the you have a timescale by which to produce a piece of work, and running a cake making business when customers want their product at a specific time.

If someone calls in the morning for cakes later that day, I very much doubt the customer will be impressed if the response is 'sorry but I have my kids to look after so it won't be until tomorrow' or the cakes are delivered, but they were cook the night before because it couldn't be done in the morning due to childcare restriction.

It's no surprise so many hobbies turned businesses never go anywhere if the business has to fit around childcare.

    Yes and no.

Yes, we do expect to make some profit this year.

No, its not entirely made to order, especially when we're trying to use table-top sales and free-samples to help with advertising.

But if you have to pay for childcare before you're up and running properly then you'll just never take off either, because its too expensive. Its a catch-22; starting up self-employed without having to work around childcare to some degree is only for the well off.

But this country wants new businesses and encourages those with children to work as much as they can, this is what the help with childcare costs is all about. Its a great thing we should be grateful for it.

I'm working away full-time for the next 12 weeks - I'm only home at the weekend, so she's putting it on the back-burner slightly. Still taking orders and trying for referrals from them; but not so much active promotion - the kids are enough to deal with while I'm away.

Can I just confirm, is it only after the first year you are expected to make NWM per hr?

Most people make a loss first year trading while you set up?
Nothing has been fixed since 2008, it was just pushed into the future
