Visa or Amex with apple pay? Have you got successful amex apple pay? where and which shop? thanks
My McDonalds issue was with a Mastercard (Santander 1-2-3). I'll have to go back and try again to see if it was a one-off glitch or a general problem.
I haven't registered an Amex on Apple Pay (yet) as mine is issued by Barclays who aren't offering it yet.0 -
Have managed to use Apple Pay with my Amex in two locations so far:
Pret a Manger
and
Itsu
I believe they are both one and the same company. That said, Apple Pay worked first time for me without any problems whatsoever.0 -

I experienced one pub that imposed a £5 minimum spend for card payments, even for contactless payments which included Apple Pay that they accepted. This seems to defeat the purpose, as contactless payments are intended for small transactions.
Fees paid by merchants for non-contactless payments are typically a fixed fee (e.g. 20p) for debit cards and a percentage for credit cards. However, the interchange fees (excluding markups by acquirers) for contactless payments are 0.2%+1p for Visa debit, 0.6%+1p for MasterCard debit, 0.65% for Visa debit and 0.8% for MasterCard credit.
Although a minimum transaction amount would make sense for non-contactless payments by debit card, it would not make sense for credit cards or for any contactless payments. Therefore why would the pub impose a minimum transaction amount on contactless payments?0 -
I think we might be talking x-purpose. My question was to knack92, in response to their post saying that Natwest "also disallow basic cards despite all transactions being authorised online."
The point being that, afaik, not all (or even not many) contactless transactions are being authorised online. To me, it makes complete sense for Natwest to say on their website what you say they say - certain cards/accounts are excluded from contactless payments, and Apple Pay doesn't make a fundamental difference to that.
If Nationwide allow Apple Pay even though the cards of the relevant accounts do not support contactless, that's a Nationwide decision. It might be a correct or an incorrect decision but in either case, Natwest, or any other bank, would not be driven by what Nationwide do.

My local has a five quid minimum for chip and pin but no min for contactless. One thing I don't understand is why apple pay is much quicker to authorise than their chip and pin. Is it done in a different way?0

While both authorise online much less data is sent via Apple Pay contactless transaction.
A chip and pin/sign transaction involves the following:
Dialling out to the bank, waiting for the bank to respond, getting authorisation code, get issuer scripts (This is data that is sent back to the card to tell it do certain things like update card floor limit, reset contactless counter (I.e. allow another 5 transactions without authorisation or a PIN/signature) and then removal of the card
An Apple Pay transaction involves:
Dialling out to the bank (With a much shorter message), waiting for the bank to respond and then getting an authorisation code.0 -
I have tried Apple Pay since its launch on both the Watch and Iphone with mixed results, In morrisons, Lidl and the Post Office it worked sometimes and not others, in the Co-op it took ages with the contactless reader displaying 'Please Present card Again' over and over, the guy at the checkout said it would have been quicker to take the actual card out and pay, and he was right !.
I have tried putting it near the reader when the message tells me to hold it near the reader, I have tried keeping my finger on the button and all with the same 'Please present card again' message, which takes up time and defeats the whole purpose of speed.
It seems to work better on the watch but get the 'Present card again message some times as well'.
I dont know if having a case on the phone could be a problem.0
