Are you using liquid, and not a powder?

Try soda crystals and the hottest wash possible i.e a white boil wash

Will do. My mum recommends this for unblocking sinks - assume it's the same thing.

But, yes I use washing liquid. Does powder reduce the mould build up then?

Wipe around the seal after every wash - takes 2-3 seconds.

Open washing machine door at every opportunity (especially overnight) to air and vent the machine. This prevents the mold's growth.

Powder generally has more bleach, and as more of us are now using liquid / washing clothes at a lower temp, your problem is very common.

Is it possible to remove the mild on the seal or does it become ingrained?

If the seal has got to the 'black' stage, I have never found a way to restore it.
Have tried neat bleach and a stiff brush, but in the end, replacing the seal is easier and ensures that knowing prevention is better.
  • Any ideas what can be used on coloured grout with this problem? Tiles have blue grout so not sure what can be used on it.

New seal is the only solution I think. Followed by reverting to washing powder and doing a few washers on a higher temperature above 30 degrees.

This would be useful to know. I guess a mould removal preparation of some sort. Although if it contains bleach it would probably lighten it. Would be useful to know...
  • Have you tried using a squeegee after showering to wipe off the tiles and remove most of the water from them? We do this and it means that there is less water that has to evaporate, meaning the tiles and grout dry off quicker, giving less time when the tiles are damp when mould might grow.

I also use bleach mixed with baking powder, to give a paste which is less likely to drip off. The baking powder also gives it a bit of a scrub.

This. My washing machine door is only closed when it is operating. I've never seen a trace of mould in 17 years.
