No underpayment or overpayment as you wife requested the transfer and never cancelled it.

The allowance continues until your wife cancels it or one of you become higher rate taxpayers.

As  Acouple you are no worse off.

Any cancellation by your wife will only take effect from the end of the tax year in which it is made. - 5 April

  • Hi,

I am looking for some advice and support, please.

My annual income before tax is £47025 plus my company pay me £4500 car allowance for my personal car, which is a totally of £51,525

With my travel I get 0.25p per mile and I claim 0.20p from the government for the 10,000 miles. Which has added £2000 to my personal allowance I think is £14,570.

I am claiming marriage allowance £1260.

Everything in total works out to be £15830 for my tax free personal allowances.

i am still on 20% tax, but my questions is am I still eligible for marriage allowance? Because I earning before tax £51,525?

my partner earns £9000 per year.

    i hope this make sense.

You've got a few things slightly wrong.

You cannot have a Personal Allowance greater than £12,570.

You cannot "claim" Marriage Allowance, presumably you mean your spouse applied and you get the benefit?

    Will your P60 show £51,525?

Do you have any pension contributions to factor in?  If so which method is used to make these?

  • Hi,

I'm looking for some advice and support.

My wife put in a claim for Marriage Allowance to be transferred to me in tax year 2019 - 2020 and for subsequent years the appropriate course of action has been taken regarding this.  Even to the point where I forgot to get it removed when my wife started earning more than the tax free threshold and therefore I had to pay it back for 2022 - 2023.  Due to income we now no longer have the Marriage Allowance applied to my code.

However, when I applied in tax year 2019 - 2020 the previous 4 years should then have also been eligible for repayment, so, 2018 - 2019, 2017 - 2018, 2016 - 2017 and 2015 - 2016.  On my workings because the thresholds for the 20% tax payer have changed over these years I would probably just creep over the threshold for transferring in the 2015 - 2016 tax year, but not for the other 3 years.   So I waited patiently for a repayment for those 3 years which wasn't forthcoming, so on 05/04/2022 I rang HMRC and the agent I spoke too confirmed they hadn't been paid and he said something about tax allowances needing to be changed for these 3 years so that the rebate could be issued, to which he said he had sent a referral to have this applied.

To date I am still waiting on payment for these 3 years!  What if anything can I do to get this sorted quickly?  Is there anybody / department I can ring that will get this processed?  I get told, because they are old claims they sit in a pile and could take a long time to get too!
Should I write a complaint letter, if so who should I write it too?

Any help / advice you can give would really be appreciated. :-)

Sorry if this has already been asked, but at 191 pages it's a bit long to read all the way through!

My wife & I only have state pension income, mine in this tax year (2024/25) is now over the £12,570 & hers some way under. Marriage Allowance Transfer is possible. BUT I've not been paying tax on my state pension, so far. Do I have to start self-assessment & then get SWMBO to transfer the allowance, or just keep schtum, as together we're not due to pay any income tax?

    Thanks in advance.
    Yours in confusion!

What is your actual question ?
By her giving you the marriage allowance that reduces her tax allowance to £11310 and gives you a reduction of £252 on your tax bill.  So if her income is above £11310 and you will not have income sufficient to pay £252 tax there may not be a benefit to transferring the allowance, in fact it may be the opposite, so you need to work out how it will affect you. HMRC will accept the transfer however it pans out.  If your state pension is above your allowance HMRC will review this year sometime in the middle of next tax year and send you a bill, otherwise known as a simple assessment, to be paid by January 2026.  You will not have to carry out SA.

Does anyone know if you can do a backdated claim through self-assessment? If a married couple both normally submit self assessments and have just realised they could claim the Marriage Allowance, what is the best way to claim it retrospectively please? The online form has not been working for the past few days at least.  If Person 1 re-opens their 2022-23 self-assessment to add in the Marriage Allowance section (it is possible to add the section in the revised self-assessment), what happens after it is submitted?  Would Person 2 (the partner) then have the section available (after 3 days) to also revise their 2022-23 self-assessment?

Are there any negatives that can arise out of claiming the Marriage Allowance or is it a simple calculation?

    Thank you

Looking for some help please.  I only have my state pension for income, which is supplemented by interest on savings, and my wife receives the marriage allowance from me.  This year 24/25 my state pension exceeds my personal allowance for the first time, due to the freezing of personal allowances, so for the first time I will have to pay tax on 11502- 11310 or £192.  Can anyone please tell me if and how this affects the £5000 starter savings rate and £1000 personal savings allowance for 24/25.   I am trying to maximise my income from savings interest up to the limit before starting to use my ISA allowance.
