Windows 10

I registered for Windows 10 months ago as I liked the idea of the update files being downloaded in the background without having to download the 3gb in one go. This is because I live in a rural area and only get a broadband speed of about 0.5 mps. However, I don't think any files have been downloaded in the background and this morning on my Windows Update there was the optional update of Windows 10 at 2.7gb.
Does anyone know if Microsoft have now stopped downloading files in the background for Windows 10 and the only option now is to download the lot in one go?Regards

I don't know how anyone can use Windows 10 without a proper start menu! How do you find programs? You can't see what you've got installed. You either have to memorise the name of the program and blindly search, or scan through a tediously long alphabetical list of every single application you've ever installed.
If I ever sell my soul and install the OS permanently, Classic Shell will be the first thing I install. What the hell goes through Microsoft's collective mind when they come up with these useless retrograde "improvements"?!0 -

due to your download speed I think it might be better to "phone a friend" and see if you can borrow there broadband for a few minutes , this link https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 will take you to microsofts d/load page , it sounds like your OS is a 32 bit one , click on the link DO NOT say update this computer (at your friends house) , it will d/load the full win 10 and offer to burn it to a DVD or write it to a pendrive
you can then come home and run it (from within windows)0 -

What programs would you ever run from the start menu?
Surely you would need to know the name of them to run it?
I don't mind the way it is, I have a couple of progs on my desktop that I run regularly but that is it (Mainly winamp and Memory Map) as I just need to open these.
No point with docs etc as you just open the prog with the doc.“Time is intended to be spent, not saved” - Alfred Wainwright0 -

I disliked (and still do) the metro app "style" and think they sit uncomfortably in the new start menu. But, as has been said before, you can remove them if you're THAT anti them.
I'd be more concerned about the bugs that are present. OK, we generally only hear about the problems here. A good reason to advise people to wait for W10 for at least a couple of months. If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -
pdf files opening with edge , umm lot of scope for magnification etc , bye bye edge , slim foxit reader to the rescue0

I feel a bit hard-done-by that I have to manually set up basic features of the GUI to make the OS usable. Can I pin folders containing groups of programs to resemble the hierarchy of the XP start menu?
The XP start menu wasn't ideal as installers tried to add entries to the root of the menu, leaving a mess of duplicate entries and leaving the user to tediously maintain the hierarchy. But it least it was straightforward. I kind of assumed that when Vista came out, one of the improvements to the start menu would be to categorise programs by function -- like many GNU desktop managers (such as XFCE) do.
But no. The horrible start menu leaves me feeling like I've returned to Windows 3.x where the default way to start programs would be to shove the shortcuts in a desktop folder.grumpycrab wrote: »I'd be more concerned about the bugs that are present. Well... it's the overwhelming lack of privacy by default that really puts me off. I don't trust Microsoft to resist the urge to steal my data -- it looks like that's what their business model will based on.
And enforced unskippable video advertising built into my PC? F*** off, Microsoft!0
