As I don't use it, I don't comment on how good or bad it is and I've not really been in a position where I felt the need to change.
At least you owned up to never having actually have used a Linux desktop OS.
Tough to compare something that you've never actually usedScience isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -

Wow! Loads of people use GNU/Linux OSes -- including me right now.
It's kinda funny -- apart from people on a few forums, I don't know anyone who uses Windows 10.
Linux is great if you're even slightly interested in computing. You can make it do anything! Once you learn to tame it, the idea of going back to Windows is rather unappealing.
But, despite all its flaws, privacy holes and drawbacks, Windows is quick and easy for people who don't care how their computer works as long as it gets stuff done, which is probably >90% of home users.
The vast majority of web servers run GNU/Linux, as well as many embedded devices (routers, mobile phones, etc.).
I also use Windows 7 and Mac OS X daily; I occasionally use Windows 8, and though I have Windows 10, it's not quite grabbed me (especially when updates broke and I have to get under the bonnet to fix it!).
Any of the OS's will do web browsing and email; if you use Firefox, then you don't even need to know or care which OS you happen to be running it on.
I rate them OS X > Ubuntu > Windows 7 > Windows 10 > Windows 8.
If you must have MS Office then you can have OS X, Windows, or go to a cloud-based service and remove the OS dependency altogether. I don't use any other mainstream apps and I'm not a gamer, so that's not relevant to me.
And not forgetting tablet computers, eg. iPad, though I probably wouldn't use one to write a large document.
Based on the confusion about what the license terms are, I'll hold off upgrading Windows 7 to 10, but will probably forge ahead with converting 8 to 10.0 -
I'm sticking with Windows 8.1 for an MS Windows system but I'm also happy using Ubuntu. Sometimes have trouble deciding which computer to turn on.
Linux is good for most uses but I find it falls down a bit in the gaming department. Some that are available can be lacking graphically. Regarding this however, Steam Games has quite a number for the Linux platform. These work as well and look as good in Linux as they do in MS Windows.
I've tried Windows 10 but found a couple of problems with it that don't happen in Windows 8.1. The Nvidia driver randomly causes trouble and gives an error message (much discussed on the GeForce forums). The menu bar in CorelDraw has turned white. Not easy to use since the caption lettering is white too. There will be no patch issued for the version of CorelDraw that I have.
I've gone back to Windows 8.1 since everything works well on that but will try W.10 again in a few months. Until then, W.8.1 and Ubuntu 15.04 work for me.Error! - Keyboard not attached. Press any key to continue.0 -

and a lots of other people who actually use their computer for work.
They really do not have the time to sort out linux 'issues'.
They want to load up the software, know that it will install, work with their printer, and the rest and start getting the job done.
Like others on this forum I don't know anyone who uses linux on a desktop computer.0
