As far as I know you need a licence as it isn't restricted to purely terrestrial broadcasts. Even live uk broadcasts over the internet require a tv licence so I don't think getting it through a satellite dish is going to be exempt.

If the only live television you can receive and watch is "one man and his yak" via a Mongolian satellite, you still need a licence !

  • Not sure if this has been said before but if you buy a television licence then the corporation stops writing to you.

I know some dont have a television at all, and I can understand why they wouldnt want a licence.

However some people here state they own a television but never use it to recieve transmission, so dont buy a licence.

I think they a lying. I think they do watch television.
I hope they get fined and have to pay in advance. It annoys me having to subsidise these liars.

I have a TV in my house. And I "use" it ... To watch DVDs. In 4 years it has not been used to view a normal TV channel. Why would I even want to watch the ad-filled trash that is generated around here ?

Do you mind subsidising non-liars like me who admit that they evade paying the license? I hope you don't, otherwise I suggest that you join me and contribute to making the system unworkable.

What happens if you allow an inspector in to see that there is no TV on the premises?

Do they then stop sending threatening letters?
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

Probably not, They don't appear to be satisfied at the idea of someone not having a television so will probably assume you hid it behind the sofa:rotfl: or that in the ensuing weeks you bought a tv because you thought they wouldn't bother you anymore so you could get away with it.

After reading this thread I find it pretty shocking the trouble some folk have had.
Around Febuary this year I got so sick of being spoon-fed reality TV programs that I unplugged my TV, gave it to my neighbour, cancelled the NTL freeview and called licencing folk to cance that too. When I told the girl on the phone I wanted to cancel because I couldn't stand watching rubbish anymore, she asked "Are you sick of celebrity love island too?". We both had a giggle and all was well. She even said she'd send out a refund form as I'd paid the whole year in advance (which she did, and I got my refund). I was told that at some point in future an inspector might want to pop round just to double check I wasn't watching any TV, I happily told her I'd oblige.

I've not heard a thing from them since then.
I hope for thoose of you who are having trouble that things get sorted out soon, it's not nice being badgered by anyone, moreso when you're in the right.
Debt free since 2014 - now saving for a mortgage deposit :heart2:
This time I'm on top of it! We live and learn :coffee:

Where do you live? I am getting the feeling that the whole licensing inspection thing is based on area and they only tend to target high density areas.
