MU, I used to work in a similar environment to you. It wasn't Greggs but the same idea. The majority of people who worked there were either students or graduates who couldn't get a job in their chosen field. A degree isn't a guarantee into a high powered job or indeed any job these days. We worked near a business park full of office blocks so we used to get lots of office workers in and some of them were so rude to us and treated us like we were beneath them somehow when their jobs probably weren't much more high powered than ours. The rude ones got sneeze muffins.
Not everyone is suited to an office job. Personally I hated every office job I ever had. It was backstabby and b1tchy and my colleagues would have sold their grannies to get ahead and I have never spent as much time wishing I could go back to making coffee and serving cakes as I did there. I am in touch with most of the people I worked with in the bakery and none of the people from that first job.
Even now I am probably looked down on because I have no need to progress through the career ladder. I like being a coder. If I move up I'd have to go to meetings and push paper and I wouldn't get to write code anymore.
You're not motivated by money MU and I think that's wonderful. It's very brave that you work through your MH problems and great that your employers are so supportive. And if someone snobby can't see that happiness is more important than status, then I feel very sorry for them.Eu não sou uma tartaruga. Eu sou um codigopombo.0 -
Calley, you're absolutely right! :T
It is important to realise that the person who loses their rag with you may have had a pig of a day, may have had some bad news, may be extremely worried about something, and are taking it out on you. It's not an excuse for rudeness, but it can explain some people's reactions to a trivial annoyance, like waiting at the checkout.
Of course, some people are just plain rude/up themselves/think they're better than anyone else, etc., but it helps to try and think of them as suffering in some way. Easy to say, I know, when there's a tirade coming at you!

Isn't the whole point of further education that it teaches you to compare, contrast, sort out the what if's, identify the porkies and rubbish, and it does that through using the hook of a subject. A subject which may lead to professional career - engineering, law, medicine, teaching, or something else..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I was lucky I did customer services in my last job down the phone. So could always lose a call if they started to get rude.
But in the one job that I did face to face IT support did once get called a female Dog LOL!!!!
In general people are getting ruder and ruder and I am not sure why. We all have our own problems and issues. But they are yours and not someone elses. So no matter how crap a day I am having and might feel that I want to go home and go to sleep and not wake up again. I put a smile on and say please and thank you. As I was brought up and not dragged up.
A couple a months ago I wanted to go to portsmouth for a day out. Got nearly there and there was a accident on the motorway. It ended up nearly all day nearly getting there and getting back. And missed the chance to see what I wanted as it was only there for a few days. It was inconvenience and spent most of the day in a traffic jam. But the way I looked at it I got to go home and to sleep in my own bed. But sadly someone did not as some got killed in the accident. Thats how I look at life. Yes it was crappy day but I went home that night alive.
I wish more people would see life like that. yes we all have bills to pay and crap to deal with. But I know I am very lucky to not be working but still have a roof over my head, rather too much food in my belly and clothes on my back. And I own a car which is more than 99% of the population of this world does.
Oh and loads of decorating so if fancy giving me hand. i will provide my jaffa cakes :rotfl:

I agree, Errata.
A degree is simply another level of education.
After all, I did 'A' levels in languages, but had no intention of being an interpreter or translator. I did a certain type of degree, not with any particular plans to work in that field, but because it interested me, and I wanted to attain that level of education. Finally, I did a lengthy vocational training, which enabled me to walk into a job in my chosen field. Funnily enough, several aspects of my education, at 'A' level and at degree level, helped me indirectly with the vocational training, because they had provided a level of education and hence of mental skills and certain items of knowledge.

You've hit the nail on the head there code! Job satisfaction is the most important thing.
An office job wouldn't be my thing either. I enjoy the face to face with customers and having a good crack with them!
You're right Calley, for some reason people do seem to be getting ruder and ruder. I don't think it's because they're neccessarily looking down on the retail worker (although some do) I think it's more to do with you're their first port of call, the first person you deal with. If I had a pound for everytime someone said "I know it's not your fault, but...."
Anyhow, talking of jobs, I wonder how tea is getting on?0 -
Oh gosh, yes, Tea!
We haven't heard anything, have we!
Hope you're all right, Tea! I'm assuming that the bombardment of everything new in the job has made you dog-tired!
Or, don't tell me that FOH is finally moving out this weekend, and you're helping him?
I do hope so!(I just lurve spiders!)

Hey thanks! It can be an LBE :Lollipop of Belinda's Empire (my name's Belinda).
I did the job because it suited our family situation to do so at the time, we didn't want our son to go into childcare. I did it from when he was 7 until he was sixteen, then I went back to work full-time. I took great pride in doing it properly and treating it as the important job it is. My husband used to tell people I made my living hanging around on street corners dressed in yellow plastic.:rotfl::beer:(AKA HRH_MUngo)

During my working life I gained a national reputation for my area of expertise - I also at one point scrubbed out lavvies for a living.

Reminds me of the time when I had a professional job, but got into a bit of debt, so to pay it off, I went from the day job to cleaning offices in the evening for about three months, until I'd paid off the debt. I was quite pleased, because
I hadn't been in the cleaning job more than a week or two when I was promoted to cleaning the executive suite at the top of the building! I was quite proud of that!(I just lurve spiders!)
