You need to think of the practical aspects of where you will live. I assume you like holidays - having owned in Spain - make sure there are decent links to airports with cheap flights. If you are thinking of hvaing or have children look at the local schools. To save money look for an area with decent public transport and a town with everything you could ever want within walking distance. Look at local charges for services - our water is awfully expensive as is Council Tax. All these things are very important. I know, I live in the back end of beyond in Cornwall (bought when it was cheap).0

Try Ilfracombe (North Devon). It's beautiful, right on the coast and very affordable for the SW. You could get something very nice for under 200K. Fantastic climate too!0

In to-days Daily Express [p27 of our edition] under the title,
Yes, you CAN afford to live beside the seaside
it quotes Halifax figures for the most affordable locations as:
Bridlington
Lowestoft
Great Yarmouth
Scarborough
Weston S M
Southend O S
Felixstowe
Herne Bay
Bexhill OS
great yarmouth or spain ? I'd stay in spain0 -
If you want somewhere hotter and have a certain amount of money, then you've still maybe got time to get into North Devon while it's cheaper (relatively)
And get sorely hated by the locals, pay 90% council tax on the property unless you let it out then you have to pay business rates. The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

A lot of crime in Ilfracombe and a lot of building work is about to take place there including a hel of a big traffic increase with the planned Ilfracombe-Swansea ferry. The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

Just to point out we would LIVE in the property, it would be our only property....but don't want to go somewhere where the locals hate us. This also rules out North Wales.
We live in Spain at the moment, in a traditional Spanish village,...our UK house is lived in by our son and two other young men. The Spanish have made us very welcome.
Looking more and more like the North-East!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

We live in Spain, it is not a holiday home.
We are retired!:rotfl::rotfl:
Just to clarify - we are looking for a home which will be our only property, for us to live in, not a holiday or second home.
Thanks for your advice, it is all useful knowledge!

I was born and dragged up in 'Combe and wouldn't live there! I escaped 16 years ago! If the ferry ever gets sailing I'll eat my hat. It's been on the cards for as long as I can remember - as has a 'marina' idea.
Where is the building work taking place? New one on me.
They also suffer high water rates. Anyone under SWW does.0 -

Perhaps the children idea is a fantasy but the other things make sense - need to look for good access to hospitals, for example. You don't want to buy and regret it nowadays as stamp duty and agents fees eats up a lot of capital on each move. What about renting for six months?0
