Ah! I know all about that; I've seen Nothing to Declare aka Border Security: Australia's Front Line. They always feature some bemused looking couple who have ticked the 'No' box in response to the question 'Do you have any food?', but whose luggage is packed to the gills with Chinese/Vietnames/Arab/whatever delicacies.

The customs guy digs it all out, and announces 'but this is food'. Tells them that half of it is probibited and will have to be destroyed and fines 'em 220 AUD.

    Biosecurity they call it.

I used to enjoy living in a place where I could just go to one of a very large number of countries and live there if I wanted. Get a job or just hang out for a bit with no restrictions to speak of. Qualitatively that's fantastic.

That's before you go into the financial benefits of living in the largest single market in the world.

Sadly I think a lot of people have no idea how complicated life will become outside the EU.

As for dumping imported goods at the border I can see that being an irritation. Do you still have to dump homegrown fruit when you move from SA to NSW:)

Sadly, neither the qualitative nor financial benefits include the ability of young Londoners to buy a family home and start a family, in a similar manner to 30-40 years ago.

But no matter, GDP is 'higher' now.

Leaving the EU in order to make London housing cheaper would be broadly equivalent to amputating a leg to get rid of an ingrown toenail.

So much better just to build more houses, AND keep all the benefits of staying in the EU. :)

    Fatuous

For normal people, family life is a major and significant part of their existence.

The prices of property in London (and the SE) prevents a great many people from enjoying that basic human right, in the way that was normal 30 years ago.

Maybe you like to equate an ingrowing toenail with the opportunity having a family:

Maybe your idea of progress is different to mine

or maybe you simply see more money flowing from London to Scotland and rejoice with simple personal greed.

    The're your choices.

There is very little fruit you can take interstate without permits etc. IIRC, imported fresf food generally has to be irradiated. You can't even import Bovril (BSE) or unpasteurised cheese (deemed a health risk).

Is this related to London Houses prices, the EU, tariff barriers, non tariff barriers or non economic specific situation in Aus?

    :D

Such a shame Bovril doesn't command the same smuggling arbitrage as, say, illegal drugs.

Sorry, you are obviously not keeping up with the discussion are you?

This is an example of the little rules that will accompany Brexit. Instead of easily moving from one country to another with minimal problems we will have to undergo various petty processes to comply with local rules. Imagine entering France with an English apple in your pocket and being asked to prove it complies with a new EU directive?

    seems strange that,
    such a small country,
without the massive benefits of being part of the largest 'free' trade areas in the world
and one with major tariff barriers to trade
appears to attract immigrants with some modest qualifications in economics
    and appears modestly prosperous
and enjoys a decent quality of life

maybe one rule for others and another rule for oneself?
