My late Grandad's reply when asked what there was to eat was always,
Bread and Butter and the money.

These are not adages, but quotes listed in "The Complete Tightwad Gazette"

"To secure the greatest amount of pleasure with the least possible outlay should be the aim of all economic outlet." - Francois Quesnay (1694 - 1774), French economist.

"The world has enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed." Attributed to Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948)

"The safest way to double your money is to fold it over once and put it in your pocket." - Frank McKinney Hubbard (1868 - 1930)

"Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants." - Epicurus (341-270BC)

"It is not economical to go to bed early to save candles if the results are twins." Chinese proverb

One saying I love and is so true (I first heard it on the Waltons!!!) is:

The Squeaky wheel gets the oil

Meaning that its the people who speak out and complain who get what they want first.

After all, if you work for a company and customer A keeps badgering you for something and customer B doesn't, who are you going to sort out first?

My grandma used to say "Whats meant for you in life won't pass you by" but I don't agree because I think this makes you feel you can just sit around waiting for good things to come!!!

One thing that I made up myself and always drum it into my kids is "It ISN'T Instant Credit, its Instant Debt"

I think your Grandma's saying is meant to tell you that you can't sit around waiting for it to just arrive - if you want something you have to make some effort to go get it or find it.

Your second one quoted here is just so true!

Should be the motto for MSE :)
