I thought you were complaining about poor fuel economy? Now you're leaning towards a petrol automatic?

I'm with BTIA. I sniff dark matter.

Yeah, he liked to call them 'Alpha' Romeos too...

I thought you only had £2k + a shagged Astra to spend?

    A1 was only launched 2011.
Cheapest A1 on Autotrader is £7,500 - and is a CatC write off. Sub £10k is all write-offs or high-mileage for the age.

    B'sides, it's just a Polo with bling.

Are the A1's and Polo's exactly the same car besides styling and interior? In that case I'll keep an eye out for the Polo

They share floorplans and engines yes, but you would need to check years. Don't go buying a 2005 Polo thinking it's a A1 underneath. You've also said a Micra is too small. These cars are the same size.
Sorry to sound rude but if you my post properly I said I I have £2k plus the value of my car as PX. So in total I hAve £4k to spend. I'm willing to push to 5k if the car is reliable and good to drive

You don't sound rude, but you didn't read MY post properly. I mentioned the value of your PX, but I don't know what it's worth. Where did you get the £2,000 valuation from? Does that include all the faults?

    If you're right, £4,000 for a 2010 car - Civic? Focus? Corolla?
MPG figures for the Auris automatic look a little better.

Look at those figures, against the official ones for your Astra. See how that compares to what you get in your Astra. Adjust expectations accordingly.

Indeed - it's the 2008-on Polo platform, but it isn't hugely changed from the previous platform, first seen under the Skoda Fabia in 1999.

Private seller next to my road is selling a 2002 BMW 325ci manual for £4.5k. It has a private number plate on it included in the sale, fsh and 92k miles on the clock.

If its a good buy I may tempt to treat myself to a fancier car. Opinions on this car?
