What am I doing/saying wrong? I'm very polite to them,

I think you answered your own question.

Next time, instruct them firmly to cease and desist, then any further calls, complain strongly to the CSA and Financial Ombudsman. Ideally you follow your instruction with a letter restating it.

And posting on the correct board would probably have got you best advice a lot sooner.

    Huh?

What has skin colour got to do with the name Mohammed?

I take it you missed the ? at the end of the post you quoted? ;) I suspect geerex was making the same point as you - there's nothing stop anyone having that name; skin colour has nothing to do with it. :)

I guess you can see it from a different side

you have to fill in a form, dont want to give real number because you know you'll be plagued with ppi and all that jazz, ... someone else gets those calls.

or you give fake number if your pulling a fast one, leaving us victims to clear up your mess, for years.. and years, and years........

When I moved from BT to Virgin, keeping the same number I had for over 7 years I started receiving debt calls morning (very early around 07.30) noon and night for Mrs A and Mr B.

It took over 4 months to get issues resolved especially when I advised the debt company that I was recording the call. Taking names/dept at every opportunity.

Perhaps when you receive the next call, ask for name of person you are speaking to, their company/address/reference number and write a formal letter, keep a basic letter template, just change the addressee details/reference when necessary. It's worth a 2nd class stamp.

Some companies are so lazy, and could easily do a trace on said person, but just simply take the path of least resistance.

If the letter doesn't work then call your phone provider tell them you are being harassed and get them to change the number - for free.

Hope you get things sorted. Just take a very strong approach.

I also had this problem - a company kept ringing asking for someone who I had never heard of and I have had the same number for 20+ years.

I told them that I had spoken to the police and if they called me again I was going to make a formal claim of harassment.

    They haven't called since.

We had this problem with a Virgin number - we would get endless calls for a Mr Jackson, sometimes we would be getting five or six calls a day from debt collection agencies. We tried everything to get them to stop but nothing ever worked. In the end we cancelled the account when we moved and haven't bothered with a landline again. No doubt someone else has now got the number and is still having to field calls for the elusive Mr Jackson!

Why don't you report them to Info Commissioner or even ring up Info Comm Office to ask advice as you have told them that the information they have on their database is incorrect.

The IC has powers to investigate and to fine.
