A friend of mine did something similar for three months while he was waiting for his house to be built. Him, his wife, two teenage children, a dog and a cat.

He sited the caravan on local Caravan Club caravan sites though so had all the amenities. I seem to remember that he had to move the whole shebang to a new site every few weeks though, because of CC restrictions.

If you have a chemical toilet have you considered where you will dispose of the chemical waste. You cannot put it into the normal drainage system.

OP, if you are handy with the power tools, you could look on freecycle/gumtree/ebay for a few old sheds. Buld a temporary modular dwelling with bedroom, living area and kitchen. Depending on where your sewer manhole is, you could build one shed as a bathroom.
Pack the walls and roof with insulating poly-board and then board over the top.

Another idea. How much would it cost to either buy a 2nd hand portacabin or hire one for the duration ?.

These come ready to hook-up to the power and you can also get shower/toilet units.

I already have a thread running re the base for a caravan so thought I would ask for some hints & tips for living in a 2 berth tourer caravan whilst our house is repaired.

We will be in there over the Winter and have never stopped in a caravan before!

I am interested in how to actually connect the caravan up to our mains water and electricity (we will buy a gas bottle).

Is it worth buying an awning (will it survive the Winter?)

How to keep condensation down and keep the caravan warm.

Any other hints and tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Rather than using a tourer which was never designed for permanent occupation I suggest you get an old static instead. Caravan dealers have them, but wouldn't normally advertise their availability, but they are there. After all, think what happens to all the statics removed from commercial parks after just a few years (admittedly hard) life. I know that Glossop Caravans have a good trade in exporting them to E Europw. They will also help you with delivery. Add in a container for storage, washing machine, freezer etc

If you get a static and there are only two of you, you could convert one of the bedrooms to a utility room and put the washer in there... if it will fit. It's less likely to freeze up in the winter.

It will be hell on earth in a 2 berth tourer living permanently for 6 - 12 months, why are you choosing something so small and unsuitable? Get a static.

We don't have the garden width or access for a static caravan unfortunately else of course we would have opted for one of them all day long.

Thanks for this suggestion - my OH is a very handy man so I will suggest this to him. I've been looking at old portacabins on Ebay and am shocked at how expensive they are! But will keep looking out as could do with one or at least a storage container.

Static all day long, up to 12 months in a tourer is a recipe for divorce.

Also stock up on gin and valium, I certainly would.
