I'm a welder, worked on building sites/private homes all over the place.
Used to get a lot of stick, and some people who were outright sexist (a few blokes have even asked for me not to be allowed to work because I'm a woman!) But generally people are very nice, although they do all tend to ask why I do the job/how I got into it etc.
A few times early on I was tempted to give it up, because every day was a struggle against !!!!!! trying to make my life miserable, but those few sad folk aside, I love my job, and I'm very very glad I didn't give it up
(Although it still !!!!es me off when I get on site with a boy ten years younger than me - often just a trainee! And people automatically defer to him/ask him questions, even after he specifically says I'm in charge, and has to ask me the answer to every question...)
Good on you.
This is exactly why I started the post in the first place, because I expect I may get curiosity based on my gender.0 -

Just out of interest, what sort of welding work do you typically carry out in a private home?0 -

Then I don't think I am the one living in shelter.
Although possibly under a bridge
Why do you have disdain for someone living "in shelter" .....do you mean sheltered housing or a homeless shelter or a refuge or something else ? Is English not your first language by any chance ?I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Usually installing staircases/handrails/balconies (obviously on the outside of houses for those!) but I've done bits in kitchens, decorative elements that have no purpose as well. And a few decorative screens in rooms which are open plan, but the client wants some 'definition'.
Sometimes we go in to fix any of the above, too, or refurbish, or adjust - for instance, if a family move into a home previously lived in by someone with no kids, and they want extra bars/balusters/rails added into an existing design to make it safer.Mortgage - £[STRIKE]68,000 may 2014[/STRIKE] 45,680.0
