The decorators I use are all women - they are always very busy but that's because they are very good at their job and charge reasonable rates.

If you enjoy the work and are good at it, go for it.

Go for it!! I love DIY, and learnt how to plaster, tile and plumb when doing up a house once and it was great fun. The only thing was lifting the heavy items- most of us just dont have the upper body strength, and I know I am stereotyping but with plumbing you can get into smaller spaces and do it quicker, and tiling I did it neater so less time cleaning up. You cant have nails though, and I have delicate skin so my hands got all dry when plastering. But I would be happy to have a female trades"women", and would be surprising pleased if one turned up.

I know my surprise of the woman turning up wasn't a positive attititude but I was just being honest of my reaction (I highly doubt I was the first or last to comment on her being a woman). But as I said, she was the sales rep only (didn't know it when I booked the appointment).

Many thanks, it's really encouraging to hear success stories of females in the trade.

Will certainly look into courses and will test out the DIY in my own flat first. Cor that'll save a fortune in labour and I know it'll be done with tlc too.

Aubrey if I wanted a trades person I wouldn't give a damn about their gender, colour, sexual identity or religion. All I would want is a good worker who charges a reasonable price.
Go for it if that's what you want to do, thousands of people work because they have to, at least you will have the bonus of enjoying what you do.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

I can't believe this thread. The 1800s called and want their attitudes back.

I know a woman electrician, she never seems to have a problem being in work.

As a woman haulage contractor ( different to tradespeople I know, ) I haven't had a problem because I'm female. People just want a job doing and doing well.

I'm so relived to find I'm not the only person who thinks these concerns are antiquated.

It's even more bizarre that the OP holds these views and is a woman herself. I guess women's lib bypassed her completely.

Sometimes it is just a case of the unexpected or the strange. If you have always just happened to have dealt with men, it can come as a shock when a woman appears. Many many many years ago, I still remember the electrified silence when a new member of the computer programming team arrived: he was Nigerian in origin. We were not expecting this. At that time, even women were a small minority in this profession.

I can understand the surprise - I probably would have experienced it too, but there's a big step between surprise and 'a woman doing this job can't/doesn't happen'.
