Having colleagues suspecting each other is not just bad for business, it's a health and safety issue. Even if you knew who was doing it, it would be stressful.

Say you are a colleague and you know Joe steals other people's milk because one night, having drank a bit too much on the town, he confided this to you? back at the office, Sally and Mick are annoyed yet again, because their milk has gone down another's throat. Maybe you don't care, because your beverage of choice is lemongrass tea, sachets of which you always have at hand, and which you don't leave in the office overnight. What do you do? Do you tell Mick and Sally that you know Joe helps himself to their milk or do you just keep quiet?

The management of the OP's company are morons, imho.
I actually don't disagree with the view that it is a good employer that provides the coffee/tea etc, I was playing devils advocate on that point as its something my work supply to staff.

The H&S card being played is ridiculous and it is the employers choice and as such it isn't a union issue.

At my work, they provide free tea, coffee, milk and sugar. I tend to bring my own coffee as the stuff supplied is Nescafe, which I loathe as tastes burnt. Milk bottles for free drinks is labelled for free tea and coffee.

They did stop this a few years ago when a colleague drank an entire glass per day. He left about 2 years ago.

As the company provides other types of milk I would suggest that you ask that skim is added to the order.

If the fridge is shared with other companies it may also be worth suggesting that a general notice is put up asking people to label their own food and drinks, including labelling communal items with the name of the relevant company, and asking that people do not use stuff which does not belong to them / their company.

The OP needs to be careful - they may be getting cheesed off at the thefts, but accusing work colleagues of theft could sour relationships...

Firstly, I'm not accusing my colleagues of theft, they have actually mentioned my missing milk to me. Also, other businesses in the building have had the same problem, milk that isn't out of date going missing. I would throw away my milk if it was out of date, mine hasn't been.

Whoever is taking my milk isn't a colleague, I work in a large building housing many different businesses. My employer provides water in coolers, tea, coffee etc for the 3 of us who are employed by them. They provide the communal fridge for other businesses to use, that's where I put my milk along with my lunch. If I decide to buy a £20 fridge, it would be kept in the office overnight.

I'm grateful for the suggestions, I'm going to give it this week & if my milk gets taken again, then I will go back through the posts & decide on the most suitable suggestion.

Thanks to all who have made positive comments.

There are notes on the fridge asking people not to take someone else's items and everyone labels their food/drinks etc.

I noted on another post that I will give it another week & if it happens again, I will consider other options, thanks for your input :-)

Just take in a carton of UHT each week and keep it on your desk.
  • Not so easy to do the UHT milk as some suggest - as some of us hate anything other than "proper" milk and I know I dislike UHT milk personally (ie so wouldn't follow that suggestion).
