I think it stands for "best before it goes off"0

Even if you get bread with best before 3 May, it doesn't mean it will still be fresh on Fri/Sat. Depends how it's stored etc0

I didnt post to ask if I should freeze bread or how to store bread, but the bread sold with a best before 1 May will be stored the same as 3 May so logically the 3 May will be fresher than the 1 May,
If it was for me I would bin it if it doesnt look fresh but with a houseful of guests I am not going to risk giving what could be stale bread.
The only advice I asked for was opinions on what Best Before dates mean so thanks again to those who contributed0 -
Best Before food is normally ok to eat a few days - a few weeks after the date. Use your eyes and nose.
Use by is more important for health reasonThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I don't need to use my eyes and nose common sense says bread goes mouldy,
party guests do not want to be served possibly stale bread, as I say I only asked opinions on Best Before meanings as in is it the 30 April or 1 May0 -
are you serious? you would eat bread a few weeks after best before date.

If bread is mouldy, you'll see the mould.
If bread is stale, you'll be able to feel it.
It is you that needs to use common sense0 -

I bought some Apocalypse bread and it said best before end
On a serious note, if it does say Best Before and the shop person doesn't understand the term "Before" ask them "if I see you in the car park should I stop my car before it runs over your foot ......0 -
Oh my, how did we all manage before packaging told us when to use stuff by ?
I ignore BB and Use By dates, if food is off or stale, i can usually tell. I'm sure it's not just me. Arguing the toss over whether the BB date is 30 seconds before or after midnight is a tad silly IMO.0 -

Did my original question ask if I thought bread went off within 30 seconds of midnight?
we managed well before packaging and years ago because no preservatives were in bread in my early years so bread was bought daily, but this has as much to do with my original question as your opinions when bread goes stale. I am sure BB and use by dates were introduced for a reason in the first place
My question was purely asking what peoples opinions were on when the best before date was. e.g. the date on the tag or the date before0
