  • There is no legislation currently in place that prevents retailers from selling food that is on or beyond its "best by" date, (I think that eggs are the only exception to this) so even if Tesco were to agree with you, they could still send you the bread.

I would normally but freezer is full to the brim with party food no room for the bread, so I ordered bread with a 4+ day thinking it would be fresh enough to use when needed

even if they advertise a shelf life of 4+ days?

If the bread only has a "best by" and not a "use by" date, they can claim that it has a shelf life 4+ days as there is no reason why it wouldn't be safe to eat at the end of that 4 day period.

Not good customer service I'll admit, but Tesco need all the sales that they can get at present.

and that is the job of the home delivery team , getting rid of stock that would not sell in there stores due to short dates

the person you spoke to does not know the meaning of the word "before".

Obviously the same person who wrote the signs saying "ten items or less"

    I've been Money Tipped!
Best Before is short for 'Best Before End of' so items are best consumed before the end of the day marked on the product - not the day before.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

It more than likely will be - food doesn't magically become bad at the turn of midnight ;)

    Best before means 'best before'.

It's not short for anything. Did you not learn English comprehension at school.

Please don't post garbage like this - even if you have read something, somewhere, that indicates someone else agrees that the garbage is correct.

On the other hand, a seller could legitimately claim that 'BB' meant 'Best Before end of, because 'BB' does not inherently mean anything and therefore anyone can use it to mean anything they choose.
There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.

well u learn something new everyday !!
thanks to everyone with helpful answers.
the bread is needed for Friday/Saturday for a party, I am not going to risk serving bread that is not fresh
as mentioned earlier I think the home delivery team are off loading items close to the sell by/use by dates.so if Tesco do value their customers they have a strange way of showing it, I wont be ordering fresh goods again for home delivery
I went to nearest Tesco supermarket late last night 11 mile round trip and bought bread with a sell by of 3 May. I believe this same supermarket make up the home delivery orders.
It is no big deal, I simply asked a straight forward question to see if others thought the same as me regarding 'best before'
browneyedbazzi- it doesnt say on the tab 'best before end of' it says 'best before', if you are correct it is confusing not only me but others as well
