why are used trailers so expensive?

I'm looking for a small erde/maypole trailer with internal dimensions of 1.5 x 1.2 x .4 ish.

Just for occasional use - something that will pack flat too. They tend to retail from £400ish. you can get much smaller ones for £110. But to be honest the small ones have smaller load than the boot with the seats folded down.

I've got the model numbers I want and added them on my ebay/gumtree watchlist and I get an alert when something matching my search pops up. The price are so close to retail it's ridiculous.

Why do people think their second hand product should cost about 80-90% what their paid for it?

The warranty is usually invalid on sale (some manufactuers do allow warranty transfer). They've had it for a good 3/4 years at the every least so they've got a lot of use out of it. But they think they should get almost what their paid for it?

Would have thought they can offer them at whatever price they want?

Unless labour are planning on a price cap for used trailers . . .

I get that, but if they're goig to charge almost new price I'm definately going to just buy new. At least it comes with a full manufacturers warranty and I know that the bearings are sound and won't need looking into.

Why do people overestimate the value of their used items?

    As ND says.

If you don't agree they're worth 80%+ used, then buy a new one. If everybody did that, people wouldn't sell the used ones, so they'd have to drop the price or keep them.

Just because you dont value their item at that price doesnt mean others wont.

Also, dont forget as is the way with gumtree, people have to add a bit on, so they can be chipped back on viewing. Would it worth texting a cheeky offer?

it's the same for horse trailers, we sold our 10 year old ifor williams for £2500 3 years ago and bought a new one for £3000! we were made 'silly' low offers on it, but stuck to our guns and within 2 weeks got the full asking price.

As far as trailers are concerned i only buy new as they hold their money very well

I think there is a clue in your post OP when you say you want it for occasional use. I suspect there are a lot of owners of such trailers who have only used them a handful of times and they equate little use with a high second hand value.

Ha ha! I've just been reading an American motoring forum and there is a thread moaning about exactly the same thing.

If trailers had to be separately registered with their own individual numberplate (as in most other countries and it's on the cards for here too in the near future) then the price of 2nd hand ones would fall immediately.

Having a 'new' trailer with the current year plate will become the latest must have - just like many folks want to have a car with a swanky new numberplate to show off to the neighbours how successful they are.

No-one will want a trailer with say a 5 year old plate.

My trailer is of 1998 vintage - it looks great - no-one would guess it's age from the condition - but with an old 'R' reg plate .......
