My problem was regular hairdressers kept leaving and I ended up with cuts where one side of my hair was longer than the other when combed over my face. I mean if I could see it when I got home, why couldn't they see it in the shop?

I use the pony tail method (shoulder length hair). I also use a razor to chop the sides around a little. I originally bought a special comb with razors in it but ended up using just a normal disposable razor. Only problems I ever have are with my fringe. Its a bit short n wonky at the mo but no worse than the salons do.

I can't be doing with the small talk and chit chat, plus where does anyone find the time to go to the hairdressers? and it costs soooo much!

I have long hair and have cut it myself for years and years. I used to occasionally go to a hairdresser, but I could never find one who would cut it like I wanted it ... same length all the way round, no fringe, no layers ! not difficult!

I used to dye my own hair, but I have an awful lot of white hair now, so I don't bother! occasionally I use a blue dye to dye a streak or a bit of 'dip dye' but that washes out in the end!

    This thread is great!

I get a cut at the h/d once a year. Short neat layered bob.

Then I just let it grow and grow, and cut my fringe myself (with varying results!)

As it grows I put it up in a clip thing like a pincer, and have lots of fancy ones. Or just a ponytail. I can get a good upstyle done myself now!

Anyway, I always get hair cut in September so by the time the Summer comes around the hair is UP and easy! Tidy for Christmas parties.

    All good.
  • Loving this thread. Have just given myself a trim using the ponytail method and am quite pleased with the results.

:) I have a hybrid DIY/ family haircut, with the back buzzed with the electric clippers by Mum and the top and sides scissor-cut by moi. Looking good and saving the time and aggravation of going to the hairdressers, as well as the money savings. I shall keep on with it.

Very envious of you talented lot! I wish I could do mine at home too! I have very fine, flyaway hair and after many failed attempts at home cuts and colours, I am resigned to going for a cut and colour every 8 weeks to keep it looking neat and presentable for work.

I have a male stylist - enjoy great conversations (no girly chitchat!), precision cutting and no pressure to 'treat' myself to the over-priced products that they stock!

I bought the scissors and waited a few days, should I or shouldn`t I?

Nothing ventured, nothing gained so I did it via the ponytail method, I just wet the ponytail and I cut maybe 3 inches and then I snipped into the edge. I washed it and already it felt lighter to wash. I let it dry naturally and wow, I loved it
  • I ve also used the ponytail method a couple of times now:) Bought a pair of hairdressing scissors for a fiver and must be saving me so much money so far:) I ve also sworn off salon colouring from now on
