Ive decided that although I like having a fringe I just cant get it right. It doesn't fall right either so I have decided to grow it out.
At least the sides seem to have caught up with the back now. Another 6 months or so and I should be pretty well all one length.
i find my fringe tricky as well
i keep going back and checking it just taking a bit off each day till its ok
i bought one of those haircutting things with the spirit level in off ebay but i'm not sure its helping0 -

I don't find cutting it level so much of a problem its knowing how wide to go. I think ive got it sorted then a bit of extra hair flaps onto my face. Plus the fact my hair is a lot finer at the front than the sides and the back. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. This thread seems somewhat at odds with my local high street, which is flooded with barbers/hair salons and coffee shops. :hmm:
The streets near me are awash with barbers, with a new one opening up at least once a month. Small indy cafes proliferate, too.
They don't seem to survive for long. I think it's a case of these being small business models with relatively-low start-up costs, rather than the country being full of consumers with hairdressing and coffee-drinking money to burn.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

About 10 years ago, watching someone cutting my hair (wavy, 3 layers, couple of inches below my ears, parted in the middle), I noticed that she would pick up a hank of hair with her comb, pull it away from my scalp (ie 90 degrees to scalp) and then slice it beyond the comb. At long last, I thought I could do that.....
So I pick up a hank at the top, grasp it with my left hand and pull, cut it next to my thumb with my right hand: left, right and back. Next the medium layer, and finally the bottom layer. The first two layers need not be very even as the wavy hair blends in with the rest, but remains springy at the scalp (I hate "flat" hair); the bottom layer is hardest as longer bits can stick out, so I sometimes get someone to trim them level.
I'm not saying this is a smart and elegant cut, but it looks much the same as when it was done by a hairdresser, and it takes about 4 minutes, before I wash it.0 -

I used to do the two mirror method and use thinning scissors to put the layers in to begin with. I did buy hairdressing thinning scissors which I've had a while now.
I now use the pony tail method. It's much easier to put the layers in - all I do it put my hair into sections and make small pony tails, then cut!
It takes 15 minutes usually less and doesn't look too bad. The bottom of my hair probably takes the most time to try and get it level.
I also use the ponytail method - all forward into one ponytail on my forehead with 2 bands - 1 to hold it and 1 to mark where to cut for the shortest layer.
To get the overall length, I brush it out, part it down the back at the centre and pull it round both sides to the front then put into one ponytail under my chin - 2 bands again. Cut to the length you want the front to be (back and sides will be slightly longer but even on both sides).
I tried this as an experiment and was amazed how easy and effective it was. Been doing it for over a year now and gradually getting shorter and shorter. Not sure what I'll do when it's too short for the ponytails!0 -
I looked on Argos and they had them cheaper than the one i'd just ordered from Amazon but this has excellent reviews so maybe you get what you pay for. It arrived last Saturday i gave it ago. It suggested wet hair was easier to cut but i had a first go dry to get the thick off then Sunday after having a shower tried to do it properly.
It took me ages 'cos i was being ultra careful, it was a struggle to see the back but it's all turned out ok, nobody has suggested the barber must have used a lawnmower, and i'm sure next time will be easier, If i can do it and i've got restricted movement with my right hand, anyone can do it. And if you've got a partner it's going to be easy peasy.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

Yeah, my guess is the coffee shops are only cater to people talking about their recent haircuts or those discussing what to have done at their next visit?0 -
