I've been thinking of cutting my own hair for a while and this thread has inspired me to give it a go this evening.
I normally go to the hairdressers twice a year for an all over trim and about every 6 weeks for my fringe. I hate handing over around £5 just for my fringe which has taken them less than 5 minutes! I'm currently growing my fringe out for the summer. It's the first time in my life I've not had a fringe!!
I too have very thick, long and curly hair so a thinning scissors sounds like a good investment. I was going to go to superdrug this evening to get some blue/pink hair dye so shall have a look there as well.
Do people find it best to cut when wet or dry?
Keep your fingers crossed for me!!

:T You go for it, rdone!

I usually cut my hair damp, but it is short and there isn't much stretch between its length when wet and when dry. I guess the longer your hair, the more it gives when wet, particularly if it is wavy/ curly. It's recommended to take off less than you think you need if you're cutting it wet as it'll be shorter than it appears once it had dried.

I guess it's just a case of experimentation and what works for you personally.

I estimate I've saved well over £500 in the past 3 to 4 years as a friend cuts mine. She's not a hairdresser but she is very good and I can trim the front and sides myself between cuts. Before that, I was spending around £22 (including tip) for a wash/cut/blowdry every six to eight weeks at a salon. Not counting the travel and parking costs!

:) I have started a new thread on the Health and Beauty forum asking if anyone has any advice on thinning scissors, and hopefully someone will be able to give me some useful pointers.

I haven't been to the hair dressers for just over 24 years .I do mine ,dark brown shoulder one-length hair by tying ponytail and cutting the last inch or so off.I do my husbands buzz cut all over to save money .I have to do my daughters highlights to save her money -they wanted £70 for long hair highlights!I use foil & lifting powder & peroxide. That's only my son who has to have a 'proper'cut. He goes when the style's looking a bit grown out when his sister offers to take him to a fashionable salon near here. In fact when he went last time(about 12 weeks after it was last cut) the owner said you should come more often 'I've got a mortgage to pay, remember' Ooops!

Depending on how long I manage to grow it I'd like to cut the back into a 'V' shape. Like this.

but I think its a bit beyond my capabilities.

I've three lads - and we've cut their hair from babyhood. Well, clippers - it's easy. Son 2 has a pelt, rather than hair. We trim him last and sometimes give the clippers cooling time mid way through.

My husband trims my hair - not often as he disapproves of "fairytale ends" & so I end up with a good blunt hemline - no split ends but a distinct shortened length albeit with improved thickness. (When mum cut my hair we respected each other's paranoias & only took fractions of an inch, as post cut we'd swap places...)
I don't want to think how much money the clippers have saved us! The scissors for haircutting I inherited from a great aunt who was an enthusiastic needlewoman & I appropriated a small, wickedly sharp pair & hid it specifically for trimming hair.

To achieve that V "hemline", check out www.longhaircommunity.com/ where there will be sage advice, if a bit USA biased.

Inspired by this post I took the plunge and cut my own hair (well with help of my OH!) at the weekend.

I used the ponytail method. I washed and dried my hair first, so it would be smooth. We were both surprised at how easy it was. OH was pleased with his work.

Really glad I gave it a go, as I begrudge paying £30+ for a hair cut and hate sitting there making small talk and looking at myself for ages!

I've just ordered myself a Wahl electric trimmer from Amazon, just under £30 with the postage.
