My hair is straight and waist-length, and I either trim it myself or get DH to do it. He also helps me colour it when my silver badger-stripe gets too noticeable, too.

The last time I tried having a hairdresser do it must be over 30 years ago now; and I had a full-blown panic attack, as I am phobic about being touched by other people.

I've been cutting my own hair since I was 15. My mum cut it for me before that but refused to cut the Mohawk I wanted back then :D.
I've always been pretty brassic and had better things to spend the money on. I've only been to a hairdresser a handful of times since then.

Now, it's medium longish (about shoulder blade length) and I have it in layers. I layer it using two pigtails tied at the temples as I found that one single ponytail made the layers too much shorter in the middle of the back than at the sides. Then I trim the fringe and front sides into a nice shape and get husband to straighten off the bottom of the back when I've done.
Don’t try to keep up with the Jones’s. They are broke!

Inspired by this thread I tried to give myself a trim, I found the following video helpful

    Easy hair cutting

I found it really easy. I didn't need to take much off, but is a lot tidier looking now
That is such a helpful link, Hoipolloi. Much appreciated. ;)

Greyqueen I bought my thinnning scissors from Boots a while back.

A linky here look like what I bought. The reviews for them aren't great but I haven't found any major problems using them.

:) Thank you! I will check them out, and may also check out a few other places. I do have ridiculously thick hair and it would be helpful to have a pair, I reckon.

I can't describe the feeling of liberation of not using the hairdresser. I detested the whole rigmarole, not to mention that money is always tight, and it was something of a grudge purchase anyway. The speed my hair grows, I really need it cutting about every 3rd week and now I can do it whenever I like, lol.

I'm trying to grow mine at the moment but I am stuck at the stage where the back is still longer than the sides so every so often I get my son to trim the back. Once it gets to the same level I will let it grow.... but then i'll be using this method to cut my hair.

Ive used this method before so I know it works.

I've been using the 'crea clip' to help me cut my own hair into my preferred shortish Bob style..I have fine and straight hair. Got the clip off amazon and it has saved me a small fortune.

    I've been Money Tipped!
A few years back I invested in an electric lawnmower for hair; number 4 all over, job done. :-)

Every time I use it I think of the currently £8.00/8.50 I've saved myself, based on the original ten quid cost, this has proven to be my best ever investment. :-)

:) And we ladies get to pay a lot more for our haircutting than that, even though we typically have less money than the fellers, so the lifetime savings of being able to cut your own hair are even more exciting.
