I could live with a shift to a mobile-friendly format, but I don't accept that it cannot be done without creating the monstrosity we see before us if we are not logged in.
I agree totally with you. However when one of the major things a website must do is (and I quote from Google)
AndPlaces links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped
You end up being forced to have oversized text with acres of unused space between each line. It's going to be ugly viewed on a decent size monitor no matter what.Uses text that is readable without zooming0 -
I do like new technology and I do like change - - - - as long as I can see the benefits. Can't see any benefit in screwing up the presentation of websites beyond usability on any displays larger than an iPhone.
Sadly, it seems to be the way the world is going. Some of the bank websites have gone mad months ago, with huge fonts and never-ending pages that hurt your eyes and your intelligence when viewed on desktops or laptops. I love my iPad and my iPhone but I need to die before I stop using my PC/laptop display for anything but very ad-hoc and small activities.0 -
Perhaps, but the font size of the date and time at the top of the post and within the body of the text suggests that the font size of the post count etc could be reduced without breaking any Google rules. Also, going by the size and proximity of the social media buttons at the top-right of each post and the quote and multi-quote buttons, I don't understand how the 'places links far enough apart' rule is being followed.InvestInPoker wrote: »You end up being forced to have oversized text with acres of unused space between each line. When I view on my tablet, the user info panel takes up a huge amount of space. Shrinking this, or moving it so that it runs in a narrow panel horizontally at the top of the post would surely be superior.
It just seems to me that very little thought has gone into actually improving the site for mobile use and presumably the designers have undertaken a least effort series of steps towards passing the automated tests with no concern over actual usability.0 -
I'm just trying the new look - it's horrible, has less information (makes my Thanked history look better, maybe), and clicking to see who thanked a post opens a massive overlay, requiring yet another click to dismiss before you can move on.
I'm going back to the old version.
On the plus side, oversized graphics no longer stretch the page wider than the window - but if you actually want to see the graphic, tough luck, there's no scroll bars.
After going back, things look subtly different, and checking in the User CP, Forum Version Management, there are only two options, New Version and Old version. There used to be several old versions.Eco Miser

I saw the new one, once. I HATED IT. Not that ythe pwoers that be care what I (or you) think. they are justifying their jobs as in the internet, change is good. Luckily I only saw the new forum one day and it went away (yeah!(
I think change CAN be good.
but no this new format it is harder to see and find things. Too girly (dare I say so)0 -
I seem to have inadvertently managed to be permanently logged in, so always get the old version, thank goodness.
I've just had a quick look on my iPhone (4s:o) and to be honest, find it only marginally better than the old version.
Is it likely we will be forced onto the new version?0 -
At the top of the Forum, I see "We've switched to the new-look Forum. Click here to take a look. Read more info here.". So I want to read more before I take a look, and I get:Archi Bald, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.
Is this the same for everyone or have I been singled out?0 -
Surely you must take note of the strength of opinion in here......
Edit: Archi our posts crossed ....but i guess the earlier poster who said he had clicked on this link and put a smiley beside his comment got the same thing.....
2nd Edit: It was masonic at 8:56 last night0 -

Same for me.0 -

Originally a month ago the new version was forced on everyone one afternoon with a banner that said the old version would only be available "for a short while". There was a huge amount of criticism immediately and it was rolled back a few hours later. Martin Lewis posted on the subject after all of that here and changed tack regarding the old version

I imagine eventually after a long period we will all be on the new version but for the foreseeable future we will be able to use the good older version. The 'you can switch back' for a short while - is not correct. You can switch back and we've no plans to switch off the old style0
