Despite what a lot of people have spat at me, I know I haven't done the wrong thing in getting our pup AWAY from a bad person and a awful situation!
I have also taken him back to the vets (saw a different vet this time, much more thorough to be fair) this evening, he has to remain on Chicken & Rice (Royal Canin cans!!) for 5 days! If he shows no improvement he will have to be sedated and x-rayed to see if there is anything there.
I have since spoken to Consumer Direct AND I can claim the vet fees back from the person who bred, if she can't show he was vet checked previous to leaving!

So you're going to claim the vets fees back on a dog that you didn't enquire about health etc. (so can't claim the seller lied), and with no proof of why the dog has a dodgy stomach? As has been said, it could be any number of reasons, many of which aren't the breeder's fault.
And you're going to claim all of this back from a person for whom you only have an email address and telephone number.
    Good luck with that.

You are in an awful situation mostly of your own making, but hope your dog gets well.

How are you going to get anything back if the breeder is ignoring you?

This thread is actually really concerning me, we all read terrible stories all day and perhaps we become immune, but I can't get this one out of my head. It reminds me of the old white elephant predicament where something lovely was given almost as a punishment
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_elephant

perhaps the relatives really disliked the OP?

I am also concerned that if the OP is looking at going bankrupt that she has not taken proper advice. I lurk on the BR board and some stories there nearly reduce me to tears, there are parents who worry about buying ice creams on a rare day trip out due to the amount they have been 'allowed' under BR where they have to juggle necessities with a rare treat for a child. Yet the OP seems to think she is going to be allowed enough money to keep her child happy as well as lots of disposable income to spend on a very expensive pet. I really fear that once the hardship of BR bites something will suffer, and I suspect it won't be the OP

As for constructive advice, and not being in the dog world I don't know if this is possible- but could the dog be handed safely over to an animal charity who could care for it and hopefully pass it on to a good home. If the dog is ill, and this is not just settling in issues, then a charity might be able to raise funds to get some medical attention for it. Then full details, however scant they are, of the breeder could be passed to the police and all assistance given to track down and perhaps investigate the breeder situation.

Then fi the child does want a pet, get something cheap with no maintenance like a fish .

One last thought, if the relatives truly did buy the dog and this isn't an attmpt to defraud the BR situation, then only they have the contract with the breeder, so any legal attempt to reclaim anything would have to come via them.

Obviously if OP was given the money for the dog then that affects the BR situation as you can't just go round spending money on un necessary items immediately before you file for BR, and that could open a whole new issue for the OP.

    There are several possibilities
This may have been a puppy farm.
It may be a poorly bred litter
It may be an ok dog from a private individual
It may recover from its sickness and be a fine dog if properly trained

And several other permutations, what most concerning is that this is looking like one of those cases where it's going to be a disaster because so little thought seems to have gone into selecting the right breed, size ,home situation .
The financial side is an all important one I won't even comment on.

No one wants to appear holier than thou , but my main concerns when I was looking at getting a dog was - what if im not a good enough owner, what if I find I can't cope with the dog, and these concerns led me to do lots of online research and let's face it , there's no excuse nowadays with the Internet NOT to able to access this

I had all of the same concerns, I knew I wanted a rescue dog and I did already have a lot of doggy experience but I couldn't bear the thought of being the wrong home for a dog and the lasting problems that can cause.

That's why I started fostering, it was a nice way to see how well a dog would fit in with my lifestyle but having the safety net of the rescue. It has since turned into something a lot more rewarding and I love being part of the rehabilitation and seeing the difference it can make to the dog and their new family.

I am now several years down the line having fostered numerous dogs, some for as little as two weeks and others longer term and I am a failed fosterer twice over. I wouldn't have it any other way.

The really is no excuse for getting a dog the way OP did, it was an utterly irresponsible thing to do and the reason foster homes and rescues need to exist. Yes rescues also help with abuse and neglect cases but the majority of dogs in rescue have started out life in a home and later get dumped or signed over.

There was even one guy who took 3 perfectly healthy dogs to a vets to be put down - for no other reason than he decided one day he didnt want them anymore. Vet ended up donating the fee he was paid to put the dogs down to help with the costs of rehoming them.
