So Got an email from BT at 01.55 saying my broadband service was switched off. Got up (06.30) plugged in the new router into the openreach fibre modem and it all works tickety boo http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4642930189 hoping my speed creeps up a little more.

Ive switched over to using my own router now by using the credentials given for the Internet security suite as your WAN login.

Although I can not still login to the security suite webpage using the same details as I get an Invalid Username/password message.

Same here, a seamless transfer, I have the 38 meg package, and it's pretty much the same as I was getting from BT http://www.speedtest.net/result/4643655248.png
  • Hi,

I have been trying for days to call SSE so that I can discuss the deal on offer.
But they just never answer! I get connected to the call waiting 'music' for so long that I hang up in frustration.
Looks like I will be staying put with my current more expensive provider.

I believe the service is using the BT / openreach network. You will find that most cheaper providers will manage speeds and may throttle P2P during peak times.

What you must also remember that usually for the first ten days of going live your ISP is doing line tests on your line to establish what speed to set you to.

I am switching over my fibre tomorrow then phone line went over two weeks ago.

I emailed over a week ago regards not being able to log onto http://sse.netintelligence.com/ with the credentials that SSE provided and still haven't received a reply.

Proof is in the tasting so will wait and see tomorrow what it compares to my BT fibre speeds.

    Hi, thanks for the response.

All DSL-based broadband via a telephone line uses the Openreach network to an extent, however I understand that SSE uses a company called Daisy Group to provide the broadband service via Daisy's core network (albeit via BT Wholesale rather than an LLU provider present in the telephone exchange).

Daisy Group don't provide any services directly to consumers, rather they are more of a wholesaler - they are however a descendant of Pipex, one of the UK's first ISPs.

I'd be very interested to hear how you get on with your SSE Broadband service. Their blurb does state they use traffic management, but I'm curious as to how intrusive this might be - Plusnet also have traffic management but it seems quite benign. But SSE is cheaper than Plusnet - seems like they're pretty much cheaper than everyone (with their current 2 year offers of free or half-price), so one can't help but wonder if this is going to show.

One thing I have read is that with SSE Broadband, speed tests may be deceptive as their traffic management systems might prioritise such traffic - I think some other providers do this too (including mobile networks).

So real world speeds for normal usage could be less - one test would be to download a large file from somewhere.

(Microsoft is not exactly short of small change to run servers and pay for bandwidth, so one test could be to download a large file from them - for example this 769MB file - it's actually an ISO .img file for installing Office 2013 Pro Plus, but the point is it's a large-ish download.)
  • I have found the ADSL service fine so far. No outages at all. I have streamed a bit of video, SKY Now, and catch up TV etc and no issues at all with anything so far.

The speed tests do give faster results than I ever got from BT and above what I thought my ADSL line would be capable of.
Just got 10.75 Mbps download and upload of 1.49 using http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/?&again=pageWithResults

7.83 and 0.84 with BT wholesale speed test - which compares with what I got from BT

I am using a Linksys EA6700 router with the supplied SSE Modem/router, but cannot get this in bridge mode so just have SSE router wifi off and connected to EA6700 via LAN - not WAN.

Think I will invest my savings in a TP Link VR900 or Asus AC68U Modem router which are good for both ADSL and VDSL.

I've got another 6 days to wait for my 76mb fibre and I've been considering the TP-Link VR900 as well. Will wait and see how good the supplied router is. I was quite happy with the SuperRouter TalkTalk provided so when you factor in how much the TP-Link costs it will probably end up costing me more for switching to SSE and being without internet for 3 weeks is shocking.

Can you post how you get on with the Fibre router and whether is has AC Wifi capability - or at least N on 2.4/5 Ghz frequencies.

My cabinet in the street was supposed to have more capacity added at start of July but now last day in Sept - keeps slipping and I can't order the fibre upgrade until Openreach add more capacity to the cabinet.
  • Since switching over on the 7th my download speeds have been all over the place i am hoping it is just stress testing on the line and will eventually even itself out.

my results are taken from an Ofcom/Samknows monitoring box connected to my router.

  • Also a quick question to anybody that has switched over all ready or has placed an order.

According to Ofcom 2015 code changes ISP must give you an expected download speed when placing your order. Otherwise you may have grounds of cancelling your contract without fees.

I did not got anything stating an expected speed range or even a upto speed when i placed my order in the for of a email or written through the post.

    Did anyone else?
