I'd been seriously considering switching to SSE with the price rises at Plusnet, but after reading the posts above I'm not too keen now! Plusnet have phoned me twice this week to 'check I'm on the best package', but could only offer me about a pound discount when I said I was thinking of leaving. Maybe I'll try haggling again!
Thank you to the people who've switched for sharing your stories!
When coming to the end of your contract with Plusnet you should quote the competitors rival packages. I renewed my parents' broadband package this way (although not fibre) - they offered to match Sky's 12 months free but I countered with SSE's 24 months' free and they matched this. So 2 year's free unlimited broadband. This was after the last deal when they matched TalkTalk at £2.50 per month.

Interesting! I've been with Plusnet for about 3 years so am long past the 12 month contract. I did actually mention that I was thinking of leaving for the SSE deal, but he still said he couldn't offer me anything better than the pound off the unlimited deal. Hmm.
  • My experience so far concerning transfer of service from BT to SSE has been smooth so far - I was a bit concerned about an email from BT telling me that they were going to switch me to a different infinity package once my phone line was transferred - but was reassured that this was normal.

The communication from SSE has been great through the stages of my transfer - they send out a letter for each stage with the dates when the services start - the broadband is due to start on the 7th of sept, and I'm pretty confident that it will as go smoothly as the phone transfer went :)
  • It's still going well for me - the service from SSE has been very good and no issues at all.

Mainly my issues have all been with BT who tried to restart my phone service with them - don't know why - they could not give a reasonable explanation, tried to blame MAC code but that's for BB only - I seem to have had to be on the phone to BT countless times to get the cancellation done.

I bought a Linksys EA6700 router to try AC wireless - but the SSE modem does not go into bridge mode and I had no joy with an older Linksys router.

I am still waiting to upgrade to Fibre - BT Wholesale initially said my cabinet would have more capacity in July, but today was supposed to be the day again - checked and now 30th Sept.
  • I changed 2 months ago from Plusnet to SSE- the 12 month contract Plan that costs £15 for monthly line rental, £5 extra for unlimited 01, 02 and 03 calls, plus £3.50 for Call Display, included is 12 months of free unlimited Broadband, totalling just £23.50 monthly,
There was NO connection charge, neither any charge for sending me their new "Technicolour" Router.
My first monthly Bill was just £20.80, my 2nd bill was £23.84p.
Absolutely no problems with SSE services and Call Centre down in Hampshire, but however, a strong word of warning!!
Got the MAC code from Plusnet, valid for 1 month.
SSE set a date for transfer of Phone & Broadband to them, 3 weeks from then.
Then SSE phoned me to say they couldn't transfer the service on the arranged date, as Plusnet had failed to tell ME or SSE, that they had a "Message" ?? installed on my phone line, and this couldn't be removed unless by Plusnet itself.
I had to re-contact Plusnet, who did remove the "Message" but I had to get a new MAC code from them, as by now it had expired, and get SSE to arrange a new transfer date.
SSE then told me this is a very common problem with both Plusnet AND BT Internet, who don't tell customers switching to a new provider that they need this "Message" removed first, before any change can take place !!
The switch then did go ahead on the later arranged date- my Broadband speed (via telephone overhead cable) has actually increased from Plusnet's 3.5Mb, to SSE's 4.4Mb.
I must say that I am completely happy and satisfied (so far!) with the service provided by SSE, and the incredibly low monthly prices.
I would recommend it to anyone considering switching, as long as you are aware of the "Message" problem listed above. :j
  • Did you have any 'down time' during the transfer? I've read of some who had 2 weeks without phone or broadband. Are calls to their helpline free? I want to move from talktalk to SSE.

I am currently in the middle of my switch to SSE. The phone switched over on the 18th and waiting for the BB to go over on the 7th (this was due to that was the first appointment openreach would give them).

The only two things i can moan about is i tried to install the anti virus software but cant login to the web page using the username and password supplied by SSE.

And i cant login into the Admin side of the router (ive tried using the serial number as the password) to check out what it can and cant do.

BUT for anyone thinking of switching they seem to switch your phone over before even starting the BB switch to ensure downtime is kept to a minimum .
  • Thanks dpc. I'm a 'little ol' lady', terrified of even connecting the router! So 'Admin side', well, do I need to go there? But with SSE I'll be saving £250 over 2 years, and for that money a little tearing of hair might be worth it. Or will it? I will bite the bullet and just do it. I've made my will so what can I lose?
  • No Downtime with Transfer- Told Broadband would transfer on the 23rd June- At 1am, Plusnet Broadband suddenly wouldn't connect- Plugged new SSE router in- entered new SSE Router password- reconnected to SSE at 01.4am.
Same with phone- didn't even realise provider had changed until tried to dial 1571, which I hadn't subscribed to, or needed, with SSE.
  • Thanks David. I'm convinced.
