Hi - 3 months I believe usually, that's what http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/social-care-and-support-guide/Pages/how-to-claim-carers-allowance.aspx says anyway.
Thanks

Hi all (again)
I've phoned IS as I didn't get my IS10 form which was supposed to be sent out. Apparently it is now on its way.
We received a letter from CA the other day (see above) but now I'm told from 27/5 I'm going to be getting Carers Premium, and as such things are being recalculated - I think this is £34.60 per week.
I'm waiting for a call-back but does this sound right? What about the severe disability premium - is this affected? I'm guessing we'll get the £61.85 if we're entitled (I'm on enhanced PIP, my wife standard PIP)
I'm just getting more and more confused every time something different is thrown in the mix - I'm feeling less and less intelligent every time I look at benefits!!
Thanks in advance

you need to stop the carers allowance claim!
you will be better off by £35ish a week on carers allowance, but will lose £62 a week because you lose the second severe disability premium.
we have been telling you this for weeks, but you seem to think the carers allowance isn't an ongoing claim, but will only run for a few weeks.
it will continue to run as long as there is an entitlement and you don't stop it!0 -

Thank you. I have told them this over the phone that I'm only claiming it from 12/3/15 to 31/3/15. This was also stated on the original form which I have a copy.
I appreciate that people have been saying this, but I did act accordingly when advised.
It is them who have decided to reinstate it from 27/5/15; I did not ask them to do this - in fact quite the opposite.
They are ringing me back within 3 hours of my phone-call today (that will now be 13:00-13:30 tomorrow) - could you please confirm exactly what I need to tell them to correct this as I think I've done everything I should have.
I was entitled to the CA for the period 12/3-31/3, but it seems I'm being penalised for doing so which doesn't seem fair to me.
Sorry for any confusion and any mistakes I've made - but I am trying to get it right and do want to correct anything I've got wrong.
Thanks

The lady from IS who phoned me back went through the IS10 form over the phone, and with the information infront of her said we're only entitled to the £61.85 per week SDP, regardless of whether CA/CP is in place or not, and therefore we need to claim CA to get CP paid (extra £34 per week).
That is contrary to what everyone is saying above, and contrary to what my MacMillan advisor, and contrary to what I had finally got in to my head.
I can't find definition of what the criteria for the lower and higher couples SDP are - is this where there's a loophole we aren't aware of, or the IS are not using correctly? That's the only place I can see the discrepancy.
I think I'd got it all in my head correctly until the IS phoned and she was adamant on her facts as I did try to question what she'd told me...
Thanks - and I am sorry for repeating myself on something which has been answered several times, but when people who tell me something different to what I've already been told when they should know what they are talking about it does concern me.

she is wrong. but may only be trained in income support, and to receive income support in your situation, 1 person needs to be claiming carers allowance. i can't link ( as this computer doesn't show the page address for some odd reason ( so i'll copy and paste the relevant part for you
n brief, Severe Disability Premium is awarded at the lower rate to single claimants or couples where: Attendance Allowance or Constant Attendance Allowance or the middle or higher rate DLA care component are received, and no one is entitled to Carer's Allowance (CA) for looking after them.
It is awarded at a higher rate to couples where:
both members receive AA or CAA or the middle or higher rate DLA care component, and
no one is entitled to Carer's Allowance (CA) for looking after either of them or their partner is registered blind.

previous excerpt was from 'entitled', this one is NHS choices, but says exactly the same thing
[Severe disability premium
A severe disability premium is added for people who are receiving certain disability benefits and who meet other conditions. You will qualify if you receive the middle or highest rate of the care component of DLA, or you receive AA at either rate, and you live alone (or are treated as living alone) and no one is paid Carer’s Allowance for looking after you.
Severe disability premium is payable at the single rate in most circumstances. However, you may get the couple rate if both of you receive the middle or highest rate of the care component of DLA, AA or PIP at either rate, and nobody is paid Carer’s Allowance for looking after you.B]0 -

Thank you.
I think I'm finally there. It's the PIP which opens up the 2xSDP, that's the relevant section to me.
Spoken to CA, advised that I wish to cease from 1/4, the reason the form wasn't actioned properly was because it was received 7/4 and they can't backdate for some reason, but he's manually over-riden that now.
Waiting now for letters, and for CA and IS to speak to each other to update my awards.
Thanks again - I think it's sunk in now and I feel a lot happier.
