This can't be true!! You must be thinking of weddings in churches? Even in those cases strictly speaking surely the minister could restrict access to the church (in particular circumstances??)0 -

No it is absolutely true.
Weddings cannot be private in the UK by law. If someone wants to attend the ceremony legally you can't refuse them entry
I have friends who are Mormon - because their Temples are not open to all a Temple wedding in the UK is not legal - so if a couple want a Temple ceremony they also need a registry office ceremony to be legally married.
As for the original question -the young man basically gossiped - for me it'd be as bad as a bank worker discussing my finances with a mutual friend - In both cases none of their business and entirely inappropriate as well as unprofessional.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
I stand corrected - I had understood the venue must be regularly open to the public, however you could restrict access to the ceremony. Indeed you could hire the whole venue and therefore the public would not have access that day
I recently attended a wedding where the couple hired the whole venue - they would have been horrified if members of the public rocked into their intimate ceremony!!0 -
Ever wondered why so many celebrities get married abroad ?I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Yep - no wonder!!! I have to agree - I would hate to have people I don't know wander into my wedding ceremony - if it's a big church then ok - but a small room with twenty of your closest friends and family plus a few randoms eating boiled sweets!!! Weird0

I had a couple of "randoms" at my wedding - they were visiting the church, unaware that a wedding was scheduled, heard the service and said that they were just drawn inside. It didn't bother me in the slightest, they enjoyed it and nothing would have spoiled my day0

In our village church there were half a dozen older ladies who turned up for every wedding, funeral and christening. The events were compared with previous ones and much discussed over tea and cakes in each others' houses.0

I got married in a hotel and told we had to have spare chairs, just in case.....Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0
