Will we ever learn or do holiday companies have to force us to be responsible?
No problem for the (dead) clown concerned but families might face bills for repatriation etc.0 -

Lol I've been waiting for that post since I posted it.
Your famiies would care because it could bankrupt them.
Every year i'm sick of families featured in our local papers or on our local news begging because some dozy relative thought they'd be smart and travel with no insurance. Its surprising how much it costs when something happens. I'll give you an example.
Young man goes to Magaluf with his mates, first night drinks too much, is unconscious, admitted to hospital in intensive care. His father is on holiday elsewhere, flies in, has to have food and lodgings for over a week, lad in hospital for 2 weeks, new flights home, guess how much?
£22,000, lad is 19 works part time on £80 a week, has insurance but they refuse to pay if alcohol related. The father was either heartless or savvy refused to give permission to look at lads medical records said the only person who could was the lad, he's in intensive care so hospital never mentioned drink was the cause as they knew they wouldn't get any money, can't remember exactly what they told the insurance, but they paid out. They were lucky, but could you do that if it was you child?0 -

But then in theory thats their choice surely??? They couldnt force someone else to pay As i said the dead dont care and if my family members left my body to be dumped in the sea wherever - I STILL WOULD NOT CARE
BTW i do actually have an annual worldwide travel policy just have never understood the loggic of carting bodies back to the country0 -

Me neither but make sure your family know your wishes to avoid unwanted expense, my mum goes 2-4 cruises a year and she hands a letter requesting a burial at sea if she carks it onboard to the Head steward. I have told her most large cruise ships have their own refrigerated storage for corpses so shipping costs aren't much of an issue on a cruise.0 -

Most travel insurance will have some sort of alcohol exclusion, either a complete ban when "under the influence", or a more sensible one saying you can drink as long as your judgement isn't severly impaired or words to that effect. But few will cover you getting totally ratted.
And anyway, in this case, who made the decision to sent the lad to a private hospital?? There are excellent state hospitals in Majorca. As for the other costs, extra flights etc, really? Accomodation on Majorca isn't that expensive, we've got last minute rooms for around £50 a night, and last minute flights aren't that expensive - just looking on Easyjet - you can book a flight now, for tomorrow, from Majorca to Gatwick for EUR63 ie under £50.0 -
Current thread here from someone who doesn't usually bother with travel insurance but wants recommendations for a company who will provide cover for someone who is 'expecting to consume a lot of alcohol during a holiday in Turkey:

FYI, I've got a clinically proven extremely low risk of cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks/stroke. Young and fit. Surprisingly low cholestorol, low blood fats etc. Based on my age and my lab results, I'm much more likely to get murdered or die in a bus crash than of a heart attack. In which case, I would not need to worry about insurance policies.
Not bothered if you get insurance or not so no lectures from be but:
My brother in law was 32 when he died in his sleep of a massive heart attack. He was super fit having spent 12 years in No 2 Para and running marathons many times a year.
He had no history of heart problems and passed every physical going. His problem was only found on the post mortem.Totally Debt Free & Mortgage Free Semi retired and happy0 -
For a start, this illustrates the point that even if you have insurance, you might have a hard time getting them to pay up as, like in this case, there are exclusions.

He didn't go to a private hospital, but as he was in a coma he didn't produce his e111 card either. The hotels and flights may be cheap but the boys father wasn't paying a penny, as far as he was concerned he didn''t want to be their so certainly wasn't paying anything to be there. The father had cut short his holiday because they thought his son was going to die and he was next of kin, so the insurance paid for that holiday as well.0
