I've read all you guide. Our main concern, after our own pre-existing conditions is an elderly relative. I can't find information about cancellation due to her sudden illness

It varies from policy to policy. In many cases though (and I'm afraid you'll have to read the full T&C) relatives with pre-existing conditions could cause a company to repudiate a claim if one becomes necessary for that reason. The key point is to answer fully all questions put by the company when taking out the policy - and that may include relatives.

We get travel insurance through my bank for me and my wife. Which is current and all ailments until now declared.

I have just had a TIA and wonder if I can take a separate insurance from another unrelated insurance company with just TIA cover declared or would something in the small print exclude that.

I would imagine my bank insurance would charge me a fortune if I declared a TIA.

    If this legal

Sorry to hear of your TIA. Check the terms of your existing policy very carefully - you may find that the TIA needs to be declared before making a booking, or indeed whilst you have a booking. They'd provide the cancellation cover but not necessarily the cover you need for the trip itself - if you have one booked.

You could take out another policy with the TIA declared - and this would be fine provided nothing is claimed twice. Companies do share data though and I'm not sure what this would actually achieve anyway.

Last April, my pre-existing medical condition flared up shortly after arriving in Benidorm and I needed outpatient treatment from a doctor. My travel insurance agent sent me to a state hospital 8 mins walk from my hotel. The receptionist gave me a piece of paper which basically said come back with an interpreter as nobody spoke English. I told the agent who offered to speak to them in Spanish, and when he rang them, they would not discuss private details over the phone. My agent then rang 2 other state run hospitals in Benidorm and nobody spoke English there either. As I could not get an interpreter, I ended up going to a private hospital and paying almost 200 euros for the privilidge. I have just renewed my EHIC card and now know it will be useless when I go back to Benidorn at the end of this month.
Does anyone know of any pre-existing medical policies that cover treatment in private hospitals?

Can anyone advise - if I insure myself individually for my pre-exisiting medical condition separately (we've also got normal family cover) what does this mean in terms of being able to claim if I cause the holiday to be cancelled or have to cut the holiday short etc. Will the problems cutting their holiday short or cancelling it mean they are or are not covered? I can't find clear info about this anywhere, not even on the insurance sites. :(

  • I have just had a quote from NW FP to cover our medical conditions which comes to £200 (so much for this perk!). I can buy a whole travel insurance policy from LV for £168 or I have looked into medical only travel insurance with Cigna quote £80.
My question is :- Are there any risks (e.g. would a claim be complicated) to only taking a medical only travel insurance cover and then if anything else happened e.g. lost baggage to claim under the NW FP insurance.
Basically using the nationwide travel insurance for everything other than our medical insurance. this would mean telling nationwide travel insurance to discount our medical conditions on their policy. I couldn't find anything on Money saving expert website that explains medical only travel insurance...is there anything on it I missed? What are the good companies to use?
    many thanks
  • We have annual travel insurance with out Nationwide Flexplus account but last year they rejected our cancellation claim because we knew about my dad's cancer at the time we made the holiday booking; he died two days before we were due to travel.

My mother-in-law has also had treatment for cancer and we are loath the lose our money again so am looking for other insurance providers to cover this eventuality. I checked insurancewith.com as they were generally recommended for pre-existing conditions but in their policy document they ask:

Do any close relatives, business associates or friends who are not travelling with you have an existing medical condition (even if considered as ‘stable’, under control or in remission)?

    Answer yes and you'll find:

We are unable to medically screen or provide cover for any existing medical condition (or any recognised complication caused by the existing medical condition) of any travelling companion who is not insured with us, or a non-travelling close relative, or the person you are intending to stay with, or a non travelling close business associate.

Does anyone know of an insurance provider who will provide cover when an close relative has a pre-existing medical condition but who isn't traveling with us and isn't covered on the policy?

    Thanks in advance,

    Mark

Is your Mother in law going on holiday with you?if not would she expect you to cut your hoilday short to come home for her passing,i only ask as my mother passed away when we were in Greece, she knew we were going and told us to go ( she had been poorly for a while and was 94years old )
If so do not declare she has cancer,if god forbid she passes away whilst you are on holiday,i am sure you will be home in time for the funeral.
It is up to you and your mother in laws, partners etc feelings
  • My husband and I, both in our 70s, have booked a Mediterranean cruise for April. All pre-existing conditions declared and covered, including a mouth problem diagnosed to be non-cancerous after biopsy a year ago. A routine check-up resulted in a further biopsy which found pre-cancerous cells and day-case surgery is necessary. The balance of the cruise is due to be paid before that surgery takes place. Our consultant is certain my husband will be well enough to travel - says the surgery is just a precaution. Rang our insurer (Avanti) who would not tell us by how much our premium might be loaded if the result indicates further treatment needed. As this could be hundreds of pounds, we might wish to cancel instead. We asked Avanti if we would get our deposit back if we cancel now, so that the £3000 balance isn't paid, they said we had no medical reason to cancel, so "No", the deposit would be lost. If we pay the balance, and the consultant recommends further treatment but says we are OK to travel, but Avanti impose a big hike on the premium, we feel we are in a Catch-22 situation - any suggestions?
