    The master socket has a split faceplate-does yours? If that's the one that's dead, then someone has bypassed it, which OR won't be happy about, should an engineer be needed. Just trace the wiring from the house entry point as GunJack suggests..

    much as was thinking it in my bodged phone wiring post, it was windup who stated it... can't take credit for that ;)

    Yes it does, just like the earlier photo, but the 'master socket' is indeed dead. However, now found in the entry point, which is in a loft above our bedroom. It doesn't have a split plate.

    No way can we have the router up there.

    OR? Do you mean BT?
    BT know about this as I've dug out old notes about a fault they fixed back in 2011.

    I'm struggling with uploading stuff here but when I've worked out how do it, I'll post screenshots.
